From what I am seeing, you are looking at two different stud groups, there are the 6, V155 studs that go into the transmission case, for mounting the brackets to the case, they are shown as 3/4" x 2-7'8", one end NF and NC on the other , and 4 of the 3B1656 studs to hold the draw bar to the brackets.
V155 also crosses to L1867 and 5F3855.

Josh,

Thank you for enlightening me on the Drawbar Stud confusion I have been going through. I was on a road trip earlier today so it took me a while to get back to my computer. There are actually fourteen (14) studs that attach the Drawbar to the Machine. As you have been kind enough to point out that there are two different types of studs, Part Number V-155 ten (10) each and Part Number 3B1656 four (4) each. There are six (6) V-155 studs that hold the two (2) brackets to the back of the transmission housing, and four (4) V-155 studs that hold the end of the Drawbar to the bottom of the transmission housing. Then there are the four (4) 3B1656 studs that hold the Curved Plate that attaches to the bottom of the Brackets. The V-155 stud is .750 inches in diameter and 2.875 inches long. It has .750 - 10 threads on one end of the stud and .750 - 16 threads on the other end of the stud. The .750 - 10 side of the V-155 stud is the side that threads into the transmission housing in ten (10) locations. The 3B1656 stud is .750 inches in diameter and 3.250 inches long. It has .750 - 16 threads on both ends of the stud. The 1.125 inch threaded side ( shorter threaded side) of the 3B1656 stud is the side that threads into the bottom of the Brackets to hold the Curved Plate. I have been looking on line for studs and could not find the 3B1656 stud. Caterpillar is asking $27.00 a piece for the V-155 stud. While searching for studs I found a V-155 match made by Dorman automotive group. They are an exact match in dimensions and are a Grade eight (8) fastener. They are manufactured by Dorman to be replacement studs for truck lug nuts. They screw into the wheel hub and hold the tire on the truck. The best part is a box of ten (10) studs cost $19.10. The four (4) 3B1656 studs I have are in very good shape and reusable. All I would need then would be fourteen (14) .750 - 16 nuts and .750 inch lockwashers grade eight (8). What is your opinion of using the Dorman Studs? Thank you and as always Semper Fi.

If they are made for truck wheels there should be no problem with them used on the Cat. I have used a lot of Dorman parts over the years with nary a problem.

Josh,

Being a Machinist by trade and having worked on enough tracked vehicles in my 21 + year Marine Corps career I understand how important it is to use the right fastener. I know that Dorman makes a good product, and at about $2.00 a piece they are easy on the pocket. Thank you again for your knowledge and help. If it is any help to you the V-155 stud cross references to military stock number, NSN 5307-00-423-8167. Again thank you and as always, Semper Fi.

Good to hear you are finding the parts you need, and good to know where to find them, Dorman has always struck me as a high quality supplier.

Is there any way to know if the Cat part is higher than grade 8?

I had carrier roller towers on a D6 breaking cap screws after a undercarriage rebuild. Had used what ever was in my bolt bins. Replaced with Cat grade 8 as things broke. But still broke more. Got real luck with one of the "good old boys" at the parts counter, as I asked he looked the part number so it was the right length . He says special extra strength cap screw. Never had any of the right ones break. Not saying the studs you dealing with are, but I don't think back in the 50's all of Cats hardware got marked as better than grade 8 that was.

So depending on how you are planning to use the machine it may not matter. Dorman has always been a good product in the past. Hopefully it has not turned into Chinese junk.

Went by the shop to visit my D4 7U for the first time in eight months. I had called the shop a few times previously to see how things were going and get updates. The shop my machine is in is run by a Pennsylvania Dutch gentleman. He has a crew of mechanic that are working on numerous machines at once. When I dropped it off eight months ago the motor was seized, and the gear shifter was rusted solid and did not move. I had stopped in to drop off the Drawbar I had just purchased so they could install it while they were working on the machine. While there I was told that both steering clutches were replaced, the gear shifter had been freed and works smoothly, the motor had been freed and is turning freely, and the head was bad and had to be rebuilt and pointed to the floor. The head was on the floor next to my machine still in the plastic wrap. It had just came back from the rebuild shop a day or two ago but they had not yet installed it. I asked what kind of shape the undercarriage was in, and surprisingly he said, " Surprisingly, in pretty good shape". He also mentioned the Final Drives were in shape and there were no worries there either. I am looking forward to getting this machine back. I bought it for $400.00 and It is going to bring the area of land I am going to build the house I die in up to grade. After spending 21 + years in the Marine Corps I have always wanted Tank, but I guess a Bulldozer will do for now. Thank you everyone for all your help and as always Semper Fi.
