Tractor has to be running to lift the bucket all the way up and place angle iron safety lock on the lift cylinders. The manual instructs you to pull the pin out of the hard bar that crosses underneath the oil pan and then lift the front end of the tractor up (the whole tractor then rotates on the final drives). I put a 6' piece of channel iron clamped (welded) into place on the tracks under the front of the tractor and then sat the tractor nose down onto 8"x12" wood blocks sitting on the channel iron under the frame rails. I made sure nothing could ever slip or fall. Then you can get the oil pan off and easily get to everything underneath. I replaced sleeves and pistons that way.

If you need clarification of some of the illustrations I can provide as needed from my original manual but I'm not into scanning and having to enhance 51 pages. I find direct scanning without rework does not produce a satisfactory illustration.

OK: Thanks, Old Magnet. I am going to see if I can unhook the clutch enough to get the motor out with the clutch still connected to the flywheel. As soon as I get the top cover off, I think I will be able to see what else needs to be removed.

Don't forget about the bottom bolt that locates the suction tube for the oil pump. Lots of these have wound up with broken castings when they were not disconnected from the main case.

Hi bboaz,

this is the bolt that OM is talking about on the bottom of the casing, I had to manufacture a pickup pipe because some previous owner forgot to undo it and then lost the bits.

Regards

Ordered and received my Jensales copy of the Service Information for Caterpillar No. 955 Traxcavator. This is an exact copy of the Caterpillar manual Old Magnet posted earlier. Photo quality, and the written explanations are very good. Makes for some interesting reading. "Before removing the diesel engine, it is necessary to remove the Traxcavator frame. See the topic, TRAXCAVATOR FRAME REMOVAL.  Seems I did things correctly only backwards, but the engine will come out.  A lot of work but now I can put the motor on a stand, work on it, and run it before I put it back.  I have since removed the Traxcavator Frame which will make the installation a lot easier, and I have found things that need attention which might have not showed up before.

Keep working safely bboaz-Good news on the Jensales photos and visual clarity. What you report regarding your Jensales manuals is never always the case. I initially had one and it was poor quality.

O yeah behind the governor and the injection pump Traxcavators get a lot of rocks and dirt others don't because the load is normally picked up over the nose of the machine and finds it's way down past the shroud the and gets packed in quit hard.😲 use care that you done brake a casting getting them off.
