Has anyone converted their 6V starter motor to 12v? If so how? Did you have the motor rewound for 12v?

I've been running 6v starter motors on 12v for decades without issue. Helps to have the higher cranking rpm too. Just don't crank it to death. It's a little harder on the drive spring but I haven't had any issue there either.

I have a D2 with a electric start pony. I dont keep batteries in everything because I am cheap. It starts so easy with a rope its not worth the effort to carry a battery to it.

I agree. I didnt realize how easy it is to rope start until the starter died.

Here one can see on my 8T starter where a previous owner left the 6V starter but the rest of the system had been converted to 12V. They had painstakingly changed the generator to 12V but left the robust starter at 6V. You can see they used a 12V momentary relay. Like Old Magnet said they have been running 6V starters on 12V for awhile now.

Haha. The place called and they want $500.00 to convert the starter to 12V. Hard pass, I'll just use the rope from now on.

I have been running 6V pony starters on 12V for 35 years or more have yet to burn up a motor. But it is your machine your choice. Mine is a D6 so you have to be up on the track. So always risking a miss step and a fall on the old pig iron.
