i was watching a video of a D4 at idle and every once in a while it wold kind of pop out the exhaust.   is this an injector doing this or a valve?

hard to say off hand, but i would guess random popping is usually a fuel issue, injector or pump problem....bad valves (guides) etc can create a poor combustion scene and random popping as well..

-easier to swap injectors than valves..see what happens..
-if the popping is really random and not steady, might not be a serious problem at all

This "wet stacking" is that when it blows oil and/or condensation out the stack? My D318 No.12 has started spitting oil out the stack but not that visible until the end of the day ... I did change oil and warmed it up at 1/2 throttle and even ran it for 30 min. took some paper and covered the exhaust to see if it was visible on the paper ... . not  that much and stack was oily anyway
Max temp is 165°F no.6 cyl ... no.1 cyl 148°F
Two new thermostats on their way.

lashing the valves wouldn't be a bad idea either, just to see how close clearances are to spec etc..

My 5U passes oil as when I restored it, I didn't do anything with the cylinders/rings because they were "nice and oily shiny" but I did work the head over fully with new valves, guides, and seats. In retrospect, I should have pulled the pistons when I had the engine apart and cleaned up the rings and grooves. I'm sure some of them are stuck or not able to fully move. When I initially cleaned the head up, the exhaust ports were choked (like 50%) with hard, oily carbon. The machine had been previously owned by a landscaper so I can imagine that it spent hours idling. The plan this year (will it actually happen?) is to get it on a plow and get it to do some actual work and get the engine temperature up. My understanding from other folks' experiences is that this would clean it up in the moment but won't solve the problem. I'm in no hurry to fix the issue so instead I'll put a curve on the top of the exhaust pipe so the oily smoke doesn't land (as much) on me

Cheers,
Neil
