I’ll give that a try probably Friday when I can get back to it. That’s good to no that maybe my generator is working and the problem lies in the regulator somewhere. Thanks for all your help

If you are working with a fully charged battery the generator will not show a charge rate. The only time it will show a charge is when the voltage is low enough to call for the generator to cut in.

I have a 1954 cat 212 grader 9t4192 I've restored.  The generator has been gone thru with all new parts, Armature was tested new fields, brush plate, brushes and regulator. I can't get anything out of it.  I've tried polarizing it with no luck.  Any ideas?? Also looking for worm gears for the steering box.

Hi Etbrig123,
Glad to see you have been able to get some help with your charging system, OM sure knows his stuff.  Your 212 looks great!  What kind of tires did you end up putting on it? I need tires in the worst of ways.  I see that you also ask about worm gears for the steering box.  I recently went through this with my 212, its a bit of a weak spot on them.  Most of the parts are no longer available new.  I had to wait and find a 212 that was being wrecked for parts, or to far gone to restore to get the parts from the steering box to install on mine.  I know that is not the answer you want to hear.  If you have the parts manual and the part numbers for the pieces you need, you can try putting them in the search bar on machinerytrader.com if there are any dealers that have stock of them they will show in the list and you can contact them.  I have done that with a few parts in the past for this old iron we love to play with.
Thank you
Nathan Duncan

Yea when I got my 212  the lower shaft on the steering was bent and had the splines barber poled. It was bent enough we had to straighten it just to get it out due to not going thru the bushings in the frame.  Some how we was able to get it really straight with just a port a power.  The gear box was full of grease and after cleaning, the worm gears had rough pitting.  I'm using it for now until I can find some parts to repair it.  As far as the tires, I got them on ebay.  They are a 11.2-24 MRT 12ply.  If I had it to do over I would get 1 size bigger.  They work but are about a inch shorter and a little narrow than the 10.00 -24 tires I have on the front.  I had 2 out of 6 -10.00 that was ok for the front.

We are at a total loss! My dad said back in the day, he remembers that there should be a spark between the to post on the generator if you jumped them together and mine does not. It runs and slows down like you said it should. We tried the test you had told me to try and still nothing. We done away with the factory wiring and ran a new wire to the battery to rule that out and it doesn't show any charging. I had the armature tested and they said it was good. The only thing I can come up with is the fields I got are delco 1922701. The guy at the starter shop said they were 24v. The number on them matches the box and they are delco 12v. I got them because I am running a 12v battery. I'm wondering if they are weak?? since his test showed 24 volt or am I barking up the wrong tree.

Do you have the correct drive housing on the engine? Some had an idler gear in them.

Yes, running the idler gear housing reverses rotation.
1922201 is the correct 12v coils for 30-35 amp (clockwise rotation)
Use ohmmeter to measure resistance between "F"  terminal and  "A" terminal, (normal should be 7 to 15 ohm) If it is less check the field coil connected to the "F" terminal. If the insulation is scorched, or it looks like it has been overheated it may be shorted. Did you get good solder connections to the terminals?

this sounds alot like my D4 charging system when i put it back into service. i fixed it by removing the cove from the VR and cleaning the points with emery cloth.

When I got the grader the motor was out of it due to a stuck clutch and broken pressure plate spring housing. I'm thinking if it was swapped out it would have been done in the early 90s at best. I'll go check the ohms and see what that reads and go from there. My dad said he remembers generators being problems but could usually get them working.
