New member here.   I just bought a D4 7U and am in the process of moving it home.  One issue that the machine has is that the right drive sprocket has the hub broken out of it.  Several of my friends that also have cats have never seen this before and I thought it was quite odd.  The machine was mostly used to clear paths through the timber to retrieve fire wood so we thought that maybe they pivoted into a stump and broke it.  This happened along time go and the details of the failure have been forgotten.   In trying to move it we discovered that all 10 of the lower rollers and the two top rollers are froze up solid.  Could that have contributed to the failure?  There is a whole story that goes with retrieving this machine that will share when I get it home.  Unfortunately I don't have any pictures yet.

this sounds like a fun post and i hope you follow through with lots of pictures and more info as you rescue this 7U. i would guess it broke the sprocket and there it sat till all the bottom rollers froze up. Pictures will help the great minds of this club guide you in the right direction to bringing the Cat back to life.

Depending on where and how it is broken there's a good chance it can be welded back together assuming it is worth saving.

I keep telling myself it is fun and I think things will go better when I get it home and I'm not working 200 miles away.

Old magnet thank's for the suggestion on welding. When the sprocket broke they limped it back home so I think it will be difficult to get things lined back up square to weld it up. I will keep everyone posted.

Eddie , that is a fine example of "The Fred Flintstone School Of Mechanics" . Those welds look even worse than mine. Elig, you might be better off finding a used sprocket. Just my 2 cents worth. Grant.

To fit that fine mess they cut the track frame rather than removing it, it looks like. A bit better weld but still not something to brag about.

the machine looks to be an incomplete early Trackson but could be some other brand unit as it has chain drive to the overhead winches. It has the loader frame bolted to the track frames in weak areas.
There are bodged repairs and additions every where.
The current owner said he may yet be resurrecting it enough to show its history of abuse and bush repairs.
