Can any one tell me what the proper torque is for the connecting rods and the cylinder heads on the D4600/ D318 starting engine ? I can’t seem to find this any where . Thanks in advance . Alan

I’m assuming as they’re not mentioned specifically in the Serviceman’s Reference Book that the general specs apply. I’m sure better qualified guys than me would know better..

Hi Team,
from memory the con-rod nut torque is lower than standard bolt/nut torque.
On the D318/D4600 pony engines I simply do the nut up to around 24 lb/ft and start checking for alignment of the split pin holes.
In my experience used con-rod bolts/nuts etc. on these pony con-rods will become tight at around the time the split pin holes align.
Your experience may vary.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I believe Dan's info is from the service manual for the 318 engine. If you did not know Cat divided things up with different books for chases and engines so you need 2 books for a tractor. Plus things like hydraulics and dozer blades are 2 more books. And there is also the operators book, with common adjustment and service/grease points.

Hi,
We do have many documents in the members library for the D318 engine (see below) including the Serviceman's Reference Book.
We would be delighted if you choose to join our club and help to fund this remarkable site.
Membership of the club starts at just $40 a year (a bit more if you prefer a paper copy of the club magazine posting out to you) and many members find that the annual subscription is well worth if for the advice from our experts as well as access to the Library.

I do appreciate all the information and the help . My membership did expire recently , I’m am hesitant to renew , I have read a lot on here about the club needing new members and keeping members . I have tried to buy decals for my project from the club (with no success ) I also ordered the thermometer a while back and when it didn’t show up , I got told they where out . Nobody ever let me know my order couldn’t be fulfilled . I like the club and the board but I have had horrible luck .

Hi Team,
I believe the Service Manual data pictured by Fat Dan above is from a D315 S/Man. as the D2-D4 etc. ponies use 5/16" diameter con-rod bolts, and the D6 etc. ponies, which are larger, use 3/8" con-rod bolts which are the 24 lb/ft torque I gave above.
Regards,
Eddie B.
