When in doubt, some whip the hammer out! I wonder if anyone would allow me to try freeing up their rack with my trusty "SledgoMatic".JM

Hi All,
You can see how well he maintains his tractors and machinery, if it brakes down and the maintainence mallet dode not work, just park it up and pull it apart.

Poor old girl, please save her

hmmm! it never occurred to me to take a hammer to my D4's rack! :) other than that, what is the best way to free it up? mine was sitting for 5 years ("running when parked") and starts good on ether but will not run on diesel despite the meter showing good fuel pressure, new fuel, new air filter. fuel oozes out the bleed points and injectors(doesn't squirt). so I'm assuming it's the rack. a "bigger hammer" or???

Uh no hammer! remove the side plate from the pump housing and you will see the rack towards the top. Spray some rust cutter on it and let it soak, also the pump plungers can stick, spray some on them too. Then take a screw driver and lightly pry it back and forth.

I once started a D4 that had sat for a decade or more and it RAN AWAY, or so I thought. It was not smoking but screaming and no throttle control. I finally stopped it by cutting off the air. It turned out to be a stuck rack. I took a brass rod and lots of liquid wrench and GENTLY tapped the rack until I got it to move. It took a long time and lots of tapping to get it completely free, but it ran fine afterward. My point is BE GENTLE and it might work out. I think the brass rod rather than a steel rod is important. Good Luck with it. Grant.

Thanks Rome and Grant, I was hoping it might be something like that. I was afraid to take the side plate off for fear something would fall out or the rack would get out of timing, but now I will do that.
