Yes you need to lift the poney motor 2 to3 inchs and angaged the pinion and removed the governor cover and the end cover cluch cluch housing it should give you 1 more inch and should come out.

Yea I fumbled around with it for another couple hours then just pulled the govenor. really wasnt that bad.

With the governor removed you will have to lift the poney motor for pulling out the startor pinion

Yea I have the Pony off and the flywheel clutch off. Was considering pulling the flywheel but someone told me to pull the whole govenor. Im glad I did. It was not bad at all. Now I can clean it up and made new gaskets. Does anyone know what size the allen to drain the transmission fluid is? Bigger than anyhting I have atm and I dont want to buy more than I need.

The exagone head should be 1 1/8 inch but take a bolt with head 1 1/8 and weld a metal rod on and you have your tool

Hello, Thanks for the help guys. I found I do have that tool that came with the tractor. My problem was I was looking at the wrong plug. I have several challanges to overcome with this tractor. I recently lost everything in the Caldor fire in Ca last year. Lost all my tools for the second time in my life I had no insurance but did have a piece of land that was unaccessed. So I bought this D4 for 13k that had a great layer of paint on it. Had no experience with an old dozer like this but I needed it and it was all I could afford. When trying to use it I realized the flywheel clutch was going bad. After about 15 starts realized the start pinion clutch was going bad. So I sit in the dirt in an RV doing the best I can. I have no luxury tools anymore such as a welder, hoist, etc. Lost all my tools for the second time in my life. Before taking it apart I did not prepare it well so its on a slight slope and I managed to get the low side on blocks. Ive gone a long way with no real tools. I have the flywheel clutch out, on the bench and new plates and disk on order. Pony is out and start pinion is now out and today I overwhelmed my drain pan with more watered down transmission fluid than I expected. Had to clean that mess up the best I can with a shovel and at this moment the drain plug whereabouts is unknown lol. But I still have challanges and dont want to keep posting to this old post so I was going to make a new post titled My D4 Challanges. I was hoping you guys could maybe follow me there. I think my next real challange seems to be breaking this pinion down. looks like I need bearings and clutch disks and not sur how Im going to get it apart. Any help and advice you can giveme ove there would be really appreciated. Im low on money, need everything, must be strategic in how I spend, and need this dozer back in service. Thanks Rich

most of the bungs are the same size tool. i used a old spanner that fit a different bung and welded a nut onto it that did the trans and finals etc.
