Would anyone have information on a D17000 generator part #6F1956, serial # 6805674 ?  How is the DC exciter connected? Will the generator  make power just as it is? I found 5 non Cat wires connected to a switch with capacitor that was operated by  the throttle control. What does that do? It was not connected to the generator. The genset is connected low voltage with neutral. 120/240 v

Beating my head many times against hard surfaces, I found the information I needed. The box is a Modutrol control. This is a motor that controls the governor on the generator from a remote location, ie service panel. I remember them from way back for boiler controls, probably obsolete with the electronics updates now. Sometimes I just have to let the internal computer settle down and spin around for a while!
I still would need the connection for the DC exciter.

sorry mate but it helps immensely if you keep all posts relating to a particular machine in one thread as I had to trawl back some 5 pages to see a picture of your unit to check which Generator Set unit you had.

It would appear that your generator was set up for remote manual voltage control.

So to have this unit be self regulating , the original Caterpillar throttle linkage would have to be replaced? Or would have to be manually adjusted for output?

The engine throttle control would still be used to set up the engine running on governor control then switched to automatic (self) regulation. Final voltage will still be controlled/set by the remote Exciter Rheostat.l

This setup probably never be used as standby power use. I would like to take it shows, having to be able to run with a few light bulbs to show that it does make power. The less hardware, switches, cabinets etc would be better. A main switch that controls the load is all I need.

You haven't talked about starting...but be aware that the electric pony starter for the D17000 has a position switch on - off and in between. In the in between position, switch vertical, the starter motor will rotate at a slow speed to allow engagement of the pinion. Caution warning about engaging pinion at full speed.
