Let me rephrase this. How do you know #1 cyl on a pony motor?

The only way I know Herb is that Cat says what it is in its serviceman's reference. For the D2/D4, I think they say that the pony's cylinder #1 is the one on the left/driver's side as you're sitting in the seat looking forward. If you can track down a serviceman's reference for the D17000, hopefully it will also specify which is #1. If I had to guess, I would also say the left for your engine.

On large engine the Number 1 cyclinder starting engine is the one closest to the radiator
