Cat engine progression was created by hfdzl
I have recently bought a D17000 gen set.
What is the engine series become after the D 17000? It became what? Next V8 series engines? I have to admit I am not familiar with Cat engine designations. Is there somewhere that you can find the lineageie; this series produced from xxxx to xxxx?

As near as I can make out from my TRW Engine parts manual the next series 8 cylinder 5-3/4 bore engines would be D364 series 19B, 20B, 21B and the D375 series 16B, 17B, 18B, 43B and that seems to be the end of the 5-3/4 bore 8-cylinder engines. I don't have specific dates but I'd guess these would be 1960's engines.

It would be good though to see a progression history, of how products were superceded. For example, something I didn't know until recently is that the D8L was effectively superceded by the D9N in size, if not in nomenclature, as it was essentially the same tractor. On the other hand, I don't know if Cat would consider the current D2 model a supercession of the U-series D2 in the long term - probably not. If anything, maybe the D1 could be considered that, but I think they're so different in purpose and format, that it would be a stretch

No doubt there are more than what I have listed here, as well there are many different configurations of those listed.

With the little research I have come up with the D17000 was produced between 1935 to 1955. There was a lot of variations with in its life both in the pony motor and the Main engine. The pony went from Timken main bearings to inserts, and the main engine went from six ring pistons to four. The six ring pistons are no longer available that I can find. Older main engine had two water pumps and later had One. Valve covers had a spacer between the head and the valve cover. When I overhauled mine I could still get the Valve cover gaskets ,head gaskets, Liners, rings for the six ring pistons, valves for the pony and main engine. Had to make my own pan gasket. and a lot of other stuff also.
These engines are a beast and have the coolest noise when running.

1951D2, Great info! Both engines are stuck right now. I will be getting it home next week. It has 2 waterpumps. Will start a list of the hard to get parts.
