I'm looking at 1960 D6D dozer to use on the farm. I found it on FB marketplace in central missouri. Before I go out and look at it, wanted to see if anyone has had experience with this machine and what your opinion is. Owner states that it leaks rear gear oil and that the seal(s) need replaced. Says its using a couple of gallons a day now when in operation. I really appreciate any input you might have. Thanks in advance.

Thats actually a D6 9U series built through the fifties, not a D6D, those were built in the eighties.

Hi, motoman.
A good, solid, reliable tractor but those leaking seals will be costly, both in time and in dollars. I don't have any idea of the exact cost but it would be wise to factor that into any decision about purchase.

You may get some idea of the market value of such a machine from a search of some of the machinery sales sites on the 'net. F'rinstance, the 1st 3 items here:

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The D6's are a good old machine. With a wet clutch you can slip the master clutch all day as new operator and not jerk and ram things, which tends to breaks old dozers.

Depend on what is leaking where. If it is leaking in the final drivers you need real hydraulic pulling equipment (60 to 100 tons). If it is leaking into steering clutch compartments it is still work but heat and a good quality 2 jaw puller will hopefully be all you need, so more do it yourself friendly.

With the above also check undercarriage out carefully before making a offer. The owner probably thinks it is gold plated, but repairs are expensive when doing final drive repairs where the sprocket needs to come off.
