D4600 Piston Ring End Gap

Would anyone have the piston ring end gap specs for a D4600? I have new cylinder sleeves and NOS rings.

My top ring gaps are .019" to .020" (5B905)

All middle ring gaps are .010" to .011" (6B2172)

My oil rings go haywire, .021", .022" and 4 above .025" (6B2134).

Hi Team,
Caterpillar Engine Specifications data sheets.
As you can see Cat place most emphasis on piston ring side clearance in the grooves.

My old Apprentice Schooling work book tells me that if makers specs. are not availble to use a figure of :-
0.003" to 0.005" per inch of diameter of the cylinder bore.

I only have specs for the 4.5" bore engines but the 4-1/4" bore isn't going to be much different.

Eddie, your info matches the D4600 Service Manual specs. Based on the .003 -.005 rule from your Apprentice Book, I'm out as much as .006 -.007 on the end gap on 3 rings. I think I need to find more oil control rings. I'm buying them from Florin and it's hit and miss. They are double-wrapped in wax paper and have cosmoline that's harder than concrete. I've broken three already trying to get them cleaned up.

agree with previous posts...top rings .004" per inch of bore is adequate...the lower rings not so serious(less heat)...usually get away with less clearance..but go to safe side..go with piston and ring recommendations..
