“Rare” D2 info please?

More

A friend owns one of these. Just wondering how many were built, specifics, etc.
This is in response to a couple of folks questioning a 5 roller D2.
I've seen photos of cranes with long frames, along with Trackson loaders. What else besides a tree digger had other than 4 roller frames? TIA. JM

The D2 Photo Archive book shows D2's with Midwestern pipelayer setups with five roller frames and also a rear mounted auger.

Hi, juiceman.
That brochure looks like it was a modification offered by Shepherd Machinery Co.. It appears that they are calling it a "233 Industrial Tractor" - maybe a 'corruption' of the Cat 933 track loader name.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi JM, would your friend like to furnish some dimensions on the track frames and rollers, such as distance from the center of the pivot shaft to the center of the rear roller, the front roller, and the idler, and then the diameter of the rollers in case they're not the standard D2 diameter? I'm having zero luck finding track frames for my tractor so I'm going to build new ones. Since I'm using D3 rollers, which are a smaller diameter than D2, I might consider a five roller configuration if it fits the envelope.

Cheers,
Neil

Neil: I am sure he would be glad to pull out the tape measure for you. It is unfortunate that you did not purchase the 18,XXX machine I had here. Quite an exercise to get it back to your side of the country.
My 16,XXX tailseat tractor has the later/longer 4 roller frames; it rides much better than the 7XXX one that resides at SM.
Perhaps I will have a long framed 5 built here as well. JM

Hey Neil Bmr has an ad on the for sale section, maybe these frames might be available still.

Thanks Scott, unfortunately those frames are the pre-5U13273 short ones.
JM - I'm just scratching my head as to why it's so hard to find the longer frames given that approx 1/3 of all 5U D2s had them (about 6000 5Us and I don't know how many 4Us)
But more than one person has rebuilt his frames with new channel and plate so that's what I'm going to do. The only part that really needs to be salvaged from the old frames are the pivot shaft housings. I can also use 1" larger channel to avoid having to weld the strip along the bottom for the D3 rollers. What would be really cool would be to put the rollers in pairs on walking beams, getting suspension like a larger tractor. I suppose one could go hog-wild and make fully custom track frames with full suspension over the rollers and the idler : ) Probably easier to cut down D3 frames....

Cheers,
Neil

Here is a page from a 1956 price list, the five roller frames were available in the 35 link and in 37 link, both the non oscillating type, the 933 11A might be a source for 37 link track frames.
I have a late model D2 5U18xxx that has 33 link 5 roller track frames, they look stock but I have never seen those in any parts book, so figure they must be custom.

The 933 11a series uses five roller track frames (non-oscillating)
11A1 to 11A2595 uses 37 link chains
11A2596-up uses 34 link chains
You can almost always look to loader units for attachment options that were used on regular tractors.
