Old Magnet:  A couple of weeks ago i ask if you had the measurements for boring the hole in the clutch housing of a 7T Grader with the 4600 motor in it.  You stated you didn't so when I took the clutch housing off the motor to change motors, I set it up on my milling machine and used a DEH with the nose cut off as a template (SWAG Scientific Wild Ass Guess) centering it on the raised portion of the clutch housing  and bored the housing for a starter.  About the only way I could see to check it was put everything together and see if it worked, and it did.  The measurements I came up with since I measured it assembled is 10.310 inches down from the pony mount flange to center of the hole, and 3.255 inches from the edge of the housing to the center of the hole.  Hole circle and bolt layout is the same as your D6 Tractor Template Dimensions.  It was a little difficult to measure all put together but with a little wiggle room these will work..  My starter drive really set deep into the flywheel teeth.  Maybe this is something you might want to add to your instructions for adding a starter to graders and dozers.  This was an old rusty starter I had but the inside are shiny and clean.  I also reclocked and redrilled the mounting holes for the Drive End Housing to move the bendix up and out of the way of the throttle linkage that sets on the inside of the side cover.  That is what the odd shaped metal is holding in the picture

Thanks for the dimensions and info. Seems it comes out very close to that of the 8T grader with D318 using 10.3125" down from the pony mounting flange and 3.4825" in from the flywheel housing edge. Do you think the 3.4825" would have worked in place of your 3.255" dimension?

I think the 3.4825" would put the starter drive in too far. At 3.255" the teeth in the starter drive are almost bottomed out into the flywheel. The Drive End Housing sets perfectly on the raised boss on the flywheel housing. That extra .2275", I think would be too tight. Maybe the clutch housing for the 8T Grader with the D318 is a little wider than the one used for the 4600. The part number for the Clutch housing for the 4600 motor for the 9K and 7T grader is 8B2680, where as the Clutch Housing for the 8T and D318 is 2F6112, which leads me to believe the housings are different. Hi bboaz,
I'm curious to know what kind of an arrangement you used to mount batteries for your direct start. Not many options available.
Did you bore 3-5/8" or 3-3/4" for the starter nose?
When you re-clocked the drive housing what was your method to handle the near covered access to the one 5/8 mounting bolt. I have been using a 5/8 button head cap screw which just clears a 3/8 long reach ball end allen wrench.

This a good information thread for Motorgrader. I am currently installing DES for a 8T3670. OM can you please respond with 42MT starter specifications for Motorgrader should be same as D2,D4 & D6.
Also if a person was too have a starter from a DW10 would this work as a direct replacement for the MT42 starter. The starter motor world is very diverse, you can make one starter work for a wide variety of machines with correct voltage ,rotation, drive gear & correct motor size..
OM can you please include the helical drive part number that would work best for 8T1 & UP machines.
In parts sales kit book do they show a part number for a starter for DW10 or late D2 7U Direct electrical start? Thank You

 O.M. I only have a single 31P heavy duty truck battery (13 X 7 X 9 ) which fits in the original battery box with the top opened up to get the larger battery in it. Basically I only use the electric start to restart the motor once it has warmed up. Even yet I still have to use the compression release to get the motor spinning then close the compression release for a start. I have started the motor cold with the DES and a shot of starting fluid, but yoou better get it the first time because there won't be a second chance. Just not a real good place to put two batteries together. The same battery starts the pony for the initial start. I machined down a regular 5/8 inch bolt to make a 5/8 inch hex head so a smaller wrench would fit the bolt.  I bored a 3 3/4 inch hole to give a little wiggle room.

The 42MT basic motor is the same for all applications but different lever housings and drive end housing (plus drive) are used to adapt to various installations.
I have parts books for the 1V, 1N and 6V series of DW10 and none show direct electric start as a factory option. If you found a Direct Electric Starter on a DW10 it is a conversion. Depends on if it is a inertia drive or solenoid lever engagement type starter as to how it may fit on other models. The inertia drive unit has a longer DEH which can interfear with a bolt boss in the flywheel housing requiring grinding to get the last 3/8" or so mating of the flanges. 40MT an 42MT lever engagement will fit no problem.
Do a google search for "102751PT" for the 11T CW drive gear.
No such thing as a late D2 7U. Parts books will show factory (inertia type) direct start for both D2 and D4 but they are not the same. Uses different drive end housings and different drive gears. Only if they have a 40MT or 42MT conversion (drilled flywheel housing) will the drives interchange because the drilling allows for the slightly larger diameter drive gear when converting a D2
