I got a chance to work on the 8T today, first chance I've had to work on one of them. Only had about an hour before my back gave out but it was enough time to pull the hood assess a game plan. I was going to pull the carb but decided to get a battery and see if there's spark and if it will fire. I pulled it over by hand once ... had some (not the best) compression.Pony oil has a whiff of gas needs changed ... looks good n feels smooth between fingers but the gas small I don't like. Full tank of gas and it smelled like an air freshener in a ten year old outhouse.... EW. Really it didn't smell that bad. Very little air and cap was tight ... still going to drain and flush gas tank and change pony oil next chance I get.

Hi Fat Dan,
it has been noted by myself and others that these small horizontal ponies generally will not start if the oil is fuel diluted in any amount and will also show signs of low compression.
In my experience simply changing the pony oil the engine will fire easily afterwards.
I also find that premium fuel/gasoline without alcohol lasts for a longer time than cheaper rating fuels.

Thanks so much Eddy B I put your advice to good use and concentrated on the gas and oil in the pony.
The oil had gas in it and gas had water in it.
No end play on the pony crank . not sure about piston rod lash.
also the cylinder valves were open which will help greatly with compression.
the carb was dry and dusty but needed a good scrubbing and gaskets n freshened jetting ports
old style cork float, valve n seat in good working order
the tank's petcock and petcock port were plugged with water, rust, goop .
the Zink water separator and petcock were completely plugged and has lots of pitting damage from water.
the small brass leaf filter was gone.
opened the drain on the bottom and took off the petcock and northing came out ... tank was full. t
when the dam broke it puked gack n gas
scoped the tank and looked fair ... cleaned up nicely supersized

How much oil will the horizontal pony for the D318 hold?
It is a lili bigger than the pony for the D315 which holds a little more a quart
Sorry I don't have the O&M or service manuals yet

you sure got a load of water for a long time with that one.
OMI Capacity chart below for the 8T and 80C.

It holds less than 2 quarts. After I spill a little 2 qts is gone.

Hope to roll smoke next week.... still looking at diesel engine and fluid levels and for any other type of cross contamination
