Ran my D7-3T pony motor out of oil. Now what?

I started my D7-3T pony motor today and proceeded to start the diesel engine.  During the start attempt the pony motor died.  Subsequently, I was unable to get it to turn over with the crank.  I pulled the dipstick and discovered no oil on it (not sure how it became so low, granted I didn't check it today, but it was good not long prior).  I removed the side lower access panel and discovered minimal oil in the engine. 

I was able to get the engine to rotate with a bar on the flywheel, but with considerable effort.  I am saddened and sick that I didn't treat this wonderful old gold Cat better. 

Ideas?  What are my rebuild or repair options?  Does anyone have a functional D7 pony motor they would sell?

Your minimum "get away with it" is probably bearing shells and a crank buff, but rather than guess, just dismantle it and see what you need. You might find that a repair is a viable option

as Neil has said can't tell till its torn down and measured. a minimum is new gaskets & seals, rings, bearings, hone the cylinders, re-lap the valves and it depends whether it has pick up the bearing metal on the crank or simply how worn its as to if it needs a crank regrind or not or if the cyl need re-boring. you may be lucky and all the expensive bits are serviceable and don't need any machine shop work other than a hone and what ever is needed to change the main bearings. but i doubt it will be that simple.

remember its best to do the lot as its just as much work to redo it when it fails and can cost even more money do it properly the first time and save money in the long run and then you know it's right.

Your simplest option would be to install Jon's available spare because all that requires is purchase, shipping, and swapping over of any external components like carb and mag. You could then refurbish your pony at your leisure and then resell that or onsell Jon's. Someone's going to need one sooner or later : ).

That is good advice. I did talk to Jon, and made a deal on his starting engine plus a few other goodies that I am missing. I still plan on doing a full repair or rebuild on mine, sometime in the future when I’m not so busy. I would like the experience of rebuilding one, plus I owe it to the Old Gold Cat for the mistreatment I inflicted. Lesson learned and I will not allow it to happen again.

my favourite uncle Roger says " check the engine oil and radiator before every start", i think that's good advice....
