Hello all. I'm in the process of swapping a running 22 engine from a worn chassis with main clutch issues (very rusty-crusty clutch compartment, broken pressure plate springs, yoke wear and wasted TO bearing) into another chassis with a seized engine, serviceable clutch and good undercarriage. My questions: Are the 22's flywheel and pressure plate assemblies indexed to the mated engine's crankshaft? Are these components (flywheel, pressure plate, crankshaft) individually balanced? I would hate to have a massive vibration due to flywheel imbalance after all this work. Thanks for your input.
4/22/21 The second 22 engine was removed today, still hoping for insight. Thanks!

USPatriot67,
I don't have the knowledge to answer your question about the clutch components being individually balanced but the flywheel fits snugly to the crankshaft in any of six positions. I don't see any alignment marks on mine. I don't have my pressure plate handy but it is aligned to the flywheel by two studs. The engine turns at about 1250 rpm. Incidentally, I weighed the flywheel at 143 pounds.

Hearty thanks Peter C! I will continue moving forward on the project and report back if I note any negative issues.

Did you encounter any issues with separating the engine from the flywheel housing? I have to replace some clutch components on my cousin's Twenty-Two and it looks very straightforward but that's usually famous last words....
- remove hood
- remove fuel tank and fenders, disconnecting gauges, fuel lines
- remove equalizer spring, supporting engine with other means
- undo flywheel housing bolts and slide engine out, allowing throwout arm to turn
Does the throwout arm need any linkage disconnected first?
Cheers,

Great afternoon Neil. You are on track with engine removal. In a perfect separation, you should only have to access the clutch compartment to remove the pressure plate springs and retaining nuts. The pressure plate and throw out bearing assembly will stay in the chassis. This was not the case for me. I ended up removing the clutch yoke (contacts TO bearing housing) on the locked up engine 22 because I couldn't get to the pressure plate lower springs and nuts. The whole clutch assembly came out with the engine. Same issue with the 22 with the rusty-crusty clutch. Half of the pressure plate springs were broken and rust welded to the flywheel studs so out came the whole assembly.
Squatch253, who I believe is an ACMOC member under a different name, has a video on youtube on disassembly/splitting a Cat TEN tractor. This is spot on for removing the engine
from a 22, aside from subtle differences.
Here's the link, copy and paste this:
Good luck!
