Hanna the Grader gets new glass (and decal question)

More

Today launched the beginning of the aesthetic phase of Hanna's rejuvenation process, replacing all the cracked glass in the cab. The fellow removing the door glass is a journeyman glazier, providing glazing service to heavy equipment all over Yukon, Northern BC and parts of Alberta. Great fun to watch someone who really knows their stuff. And I learned a lot, too.

The more observant among readers may notice that the decal says 14E, when Hanna is a 12F. The story behind that is the previous owner's having a contract that would not allow Cat 12's for the job. (Too old? I have no idea.) So he turned his 12F into a 14E. Easy peasy!  Which raises a question: Where might one source a 12F decal?

Finally, is there a recommended source for old Caterpillar yellow? (=12.0ptCat # 4C-4185, PPG# 80453 Dupont # 421A are the paint codes I found on the site.) I'm only looking for a spray can or two at this point.

Thanks as always!

I've found a few decal sources online, prices ranging from USD$75 to $155 for a set that includes much more than I need. (I'm just looking for the two decals on the side of the cab.) One source, www.esignsplus.com, will sell a set of the cab side decals (2 big 'C's and 2 big 12Fs) for USD$49.85 all in. Would prefer to buy from ACMOC if a 12F set was available, but 12Fs are not listed on their order sheet.

Was the Caterpillar "C" decal an original on your grader? I can't remember when the "C" came into existence but I thought it was in the 60's. I have had good luck buying transfer decals for a scraper on line and only later found out they were the same as on other Caterpillars through ACMOC. Great that you found a guy that can fit the glass in Hanna. My grader windows looked like yours after we had a horrific hail storm here in Kansas and it was difficult to find anyone to replace the glass. As for paint I have not been a purist but have used Highway Yellow that I got years ago through Rustoleum that seems to be very close to the Cat Yellow. There are others on the board that know a lot more about paint than I do. I'm net even sure when Cat went to the modern yellow.

The Caterpillar C decal is original on the '68 12F's. At least all the photos I see of equivalent machines sport the C. You've got an interesting stable machines, D4Jiim!

Sorry this new format has me running in circles ...or is yours the power shift? S/N 89H ?

Not sure what having a power shift would indicate. (Did I mention that I am a newbie at all this?) But my S/N is 59H498. So if the 89H's have power shifts, than that must be what I have. All I know is that I have a clutch and two gear shift levers. One lever shifts between high and low range. The other shifts between 3 speeds forward and 3 speeds reverse. (For a total of 6 speeds in total in high and low range.)

To what would the 'power' in power shift refer?

If it is a power shift there will be small console next to the drivers seat and if it is a direct drive there will be two long shift levers coming out of the floor boards. PS means one can shift gears under load without needing to stop and change gears. I have driven both but don't know the exact designations.

In that case, it is most definitely NOT a power shift. There are two long levers coming out of the floor and no small console next to the driver's seat. And it is definitely not possible to shift gears under a load. Thanks, D4Jim.
