Bad enough getting down there, I assume he got back out again, but would have been equally if not even more scary !

I've seen other videos of that machine and I can tell you its a highly specialized machine. I primarily ran rubber tired backhoe and crawled into and over a lot of things in different situations. In my younger days I would have died to have one of those bad boys but no volunteer here.
I did notice that he was dragging some rigging presumably to pull the machine back up or at least as a safety measure just in case.

Hi, d2gary.
Yep, I noticed the chains dragging behind him as he went down. I sorta suspect that he had 'some assistance' getting back outa there - cain't see it having enough traction on its own. Probably safety roped on the way down too.
I have seen them used for railway maintenance work alongside a station platform. When a train was coming through, the operator would simply lift the machine up off the tracks onto the station platform outa the way until the train had passed and then lower himself back down again. EL NEATO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is closed captioning as it played on my screen, not in English but the word helicopter and lifting came thru.
That is quit the machine with the independent wheels and the bucket that moves so many directions I have never seen before in one machine.
Safety has come a long ways in 70 years. There is a crud oil pipeline running thru my neighborhood built in about 1950. Now abandoned because it ran to a tanker port(another kind of safety has closed that industry in the USA). Other than one land owner they went around it is a straight line from point A to B (as far as I know) come any canyon or gorge, right on in a straight line. One of that major accidents on the build was one rather small rock. In pioneering the route 2 or 3 dozers working together, one on a winch line of another going down the really bad parts. As it got less steep the front dozer had the winch line removed. As the winch line is pulled in it dislodged a stone that started bouncing down the hill. With no protection on the dozer of the day it hit the operator in the head killing him instantly.
With all the modern safety rules we all get a bit tired of some days, are the windows in this machine able to withstand a 100 pound rock hitting it?

There's a video of one going into a dam in Switzerland I think and it has a backhaul rope just like a skifield snow groomer to pull himself back out, plus all the octopus-like movements for each wheel, the operator got himself into a pretty tight hole to clean sticks out of the dam outlet.
Cheers,
