Pony motor interchange for 46A option

Hi, interested in which model of tractor have pony motor assemblies that will easily interchange with the one on a 46A. By easily I mean just swapping out a few components, as opposed to major surgery. Things like linkage, maybe air cleaner, clutch controls, but not having to cut and weld coolant tubes for example.

Hi Neil P,

I would hazard a guess that the pilot motor off a D7E would go close to a fit up to a D8H without too much modification, if any.

Thanks Wombat, looking for options in case the unit we looked at last year needs moved. I think the tractor generally runs, but currently has no starting method as the guy that wanted to buy it removed the governor control rod from the pony and I guess it oversped - threw a big end. Possible I suppose that the minimum it might need is a new rod or two but I'd have to think there's more damage than that in there. Still, I *could* pick up a couple of rods, some gaskets, and head down there and take it apart.... : )

Hi Team
I had a pair of ponies from I think 572E (D7E) pipe layers that were updated to Direct Start and there is an early pilot engine that will not fit the later S/No machines due if I recall changes to oil cooler lines or other reasons.
I sold the early one to a person who gave me the incorrect S/No for his machine and he found this issue out as his was the later version pony--he tried fitting the timing gear cover off his old pony to to the one I sold him and he found the pony cylinder blocks were different.
The front timing cover has the boss on it to mount a bracket to the Diesel engine block and this is different by a lot.

I do not have the data now as this was 20 + years ago now--you will need to be wary.
I offer this in good faith and hope others can enlighten us further.
I stand to be corrected as I do not have D7E Parts Books to cross reference this.

This points out the on-going issue of Caterpillar's ongoing improvements that necessetate correct S/No's for supply of correct data.

Regards,
Eddie B.

Borrow a couple of large 12volt batteries, a can of starting fluid and a 24 volt starter with the pinion changed over to the pilot motor type. I think would be the quickest way to fire up and move it. You might mention what the serial number is.

Dead right Wombat, I should have included that - 46A2062 - here's the link to the original rescue thread - www.acmoc.org/bb/discussion-d72/26576-in...d8-need-help?start=0

I'm thinking I'd only be out some travel time and a couple of rods / bearings if I headed down there to pull the engine and look into replacing the rods. It didn't run out of oil so if I take some "rubbing" material, I might be able to knock the biggest lumps off the journals. I looked over the governor linkage and such and it's all there - for some crazy reason the guy just disconnected it all and it flew to bits. Of course that guy (not Fred the current owner) was radio silent on "what happened" but I figured overspeed. If the cam wasn't damaged, we might be in luck. Any top-of-the-head thoughts on what a couple of rods and bearings might cost? I obviously don't know the current journal size but would take a punt on std and 020.
I don't know anyone with a starter and pair of batteries so that seems a non-option at this stage
