Recoil spring bolts D2 5U

Anyone have experience in dissasembling the heavy track recoil springs? Both of the bolts are stripped out. I can make the bolts and nuts. I want to be safe when taking these apart.

Thanks, Herb

I don't Herb but I've heard people say they sacrifice the spring. Rather than that (because I'm not good at throwing away stuff : ), you could find a press big enough to fit the spring in and just "take the weight". You wouldn't really need to compress it more than 010 because all you need to do is slice the nut off with the gas axe then let the pressure off the spring. Anyway, that's what I'd do.

Cheers,

I'd rather not cut the spring. . I think what I will do is run a couple 1 1/4 heavy nuts on the bolt and then do the same to 'catch' the spring with an inch of release space. It'll work.

Your bracket is in the mail.

Thanks, Herb

When I did the ones on my 5t I put them in the press to hold the tension and cut the nut off. I also ran some threaded rod through the ears on the flanges as a safety measure. They don't really expand as much as you would think, maybe 2 0r 3 inches.
I would never sacrifice the spring.

Gary, I put the D2 springs in the press and cut the nuts off there. The pressure gauge is hard to read at the bottom of the scale but looked like 3 or 4 ton. Only had 2 1/2 in of compression. Welded new threaded end on the square head spring bolt. Should be fine. New Cat bolt is supposed $280

That should work fine. Cat is pretty proud of some of their stuff. I had new made for less than half of Cat price.
