Help!! Got a d2 5u, steering clutch stuck, attempting to separate the final from the transmission. I have everything off per the manual, yes I had thirteen bolts, counted them three times. I have supported it tried to jar it loose to no avail, I have pecked, beat it severely, heated it with a rosebudd, tried to get a thin chisel between them, won't even crack the seal. The dowels are loose, I pecked them in about 1/2" till they bottomed out. I am at my witts end. Am I missing something?

I’m not a D2 expert, but I’ve had to fill steering clutch compartments with diesel and soak them to get rust seized clutches to separate. I’m guessing you’ve removed track frame pivot shaft? I’m sure others with more experience will chime in. They’re a labor of love, aren’t they?!

You have to drop the pivot shaft and drop the draw bar/bracket.

Mine took a lot to get moving. It wasn't initially the stuck steering clutch, because even with that stuck, there's some float in the shafts and bearings enabling me to at least move the assembly a few thousandths. Mine were hung up on the dowels as far as I could tell and it took a LOT to get them initially moving. Then I ran into the stuck clutch plates issue. Because my plates were so rusted out, I just strong-armed the assembly off and bent off all the teeth - I was replacing them anyway so didn't care. The bullwheel shaft can also hang - that's the one that pokes into that boss that sticks out to the inside on the main transmission case. I used a handful of thin metal paint scrapers to release the gasket and I also punched the dowels to get them to move. What I would have liked is something like a rock screen vibrator - that would have loosened it up in no time. Took probably 3-4 days of tinkering with it to get it to move
Cheers,

I have the dowel pins punched loose they moved pretty easy, thinking about drilling and tapping them and pulling them out completely maby that will give me some movement. But I haven’t been able to break the gasket loose. Perseverance I guess

Even if the steering clutch is stuck solid the final drive case should slide out 1/4 inch or so. Collect up 4 or more old junk standard screw drivers and drive them in where the gasket is, work your way around, you may have to work 1 side, then the other, old paint scrapers work good to as a wedge. If I remember correctly there is a bolt or 2 that taps into the final drive case from the bottom of trans housing.
