In the past Couple Weeks someone put up a Post on Repairing Temp gauges and had a Link with Photo's from another source, , Having just that Problem I figured I'd come Back and save those Details , I searched and searched but haven't been able to Find it, I am not brightest Light in the street I know , but Maybe it Has dropped off, as apparently From a Previous post this is happening...I have a couple of Perfect Gauge Heads with no Capillary and a Short one Complete I could Try a Swap with. Alternatively is there a Company someone Knows off in the US that does Rebuilds , I can't find anyone left here in Australia that Does them Now .I have Rebuilt the 2 1/2 Oil Gauge and would prefer the Original Type Temp. Gauge for My R2 Resto, Rather than than the New Type Cat supply with a 2 1/2 " Bessel . Sure appreciate any Help or Ideas. LJ

I goggled this one Lance - dandmrestoration.com - know nothing about them. Are you looking to also have the face restored? These guys do it www.classygauges.com/gauge-restoration/ as does someone called Redline. If you don't need that, you can fix the temp gauge yourself. Basically just pick up a new cheap temp gauge from teh auto parts store, prep the components (clean the old capillary stub and tin it and the new capillary an inch from where the cut is/will be, drop the new bulb in ice water or dry ice) cut the new capillary, then solder a sleeve that will fit snugly over both capillaries, then test your gauge. Haven't tried it but will be soon as I need to fix my 22 gauge

Hi Lance,
this is the best one I have come across that someone kindly posted up the link to recently.
Hope it works out and so would like to know your outcome as I have some late model larger Cat stationary engine gauges here I would like to do.

Maybe this link could get into one of the repair sections for others to locate more readily in future.

Cheers,

That was the one I was looking for, thanks Eddie. I also like the procedure further down the page for cutting the capillary tube using a file and fatigue

For cutting small copper cap tubes like this I use hand held wire strippers- the ones with multiple openings for various wire sizes.

Using the 'hole' for a size smaller than than the cap tube (#18 for a household frig/freezer cap tube) gently rotate (while squeezing) the tool around the tube until the 'cut' is near the tubes bore size then 'break' the tube by bending it.

I splice them by inserting each end of the tubes to be spliced deep into an ~3" piece of 1/4" Cu Refrigeration Tubing and solder (braze). I normally would use SylPhos 15 Silver Solder w/o flux. Solder at the outer ends of the 3" tube well away from the ends of the cap tube. Soft solder would probably work fine for temp gauges.

Thanks Daron, that's a smart technique and very helpful. I'll try it out with one of Wally's broken gauges.
