I realize I am spending way to much time on air cleaners. I had a very good Caterpillar mechanic friend who started with Cat in 1951 he told about the late 50s when cat started putting dry cleaners on the amount of hours would almost double between overhauls I know of D7s that went 15 thousand hrs plus all because of keeping things Clean In the 60s we run a Fram paper element precleaner with a cloth gauze pad that wrapped around it and yes they kept the oil bath clean but I think there was to much restriction, I was glad when the paper filters come in! Nobody likes the old ways, ,old cat equipment more than I do and I plan on farming with it the rest of my time BUT if you are going to actually use this for more than an antique with price of parts and labor these days I don’t know how you cannot afford to update oil filters, air cleaners Ect. 17afarmer. no reason why you cant update to modern filters. the oil baths were made by donalson anyway. so a donalson style paper element unit wouldnt look out of place.
