I purchased a D2 5J Last year. My father had a D2 when I was a kid. I'm attempting to start it for the first time but the engine is turning when I pull on my rope for the pony motor, It appears something was engaged. Is there a way to disengage it or am I relegated to start it as is.
I have the compression release in the start position. And I have cleaned out the varnish gas in the tank and should be ready to start.

Dave, there's a small round cover on the left side (sitting in the seat) of the "bell housing" secured by two 1/4 bolts. Remove that (be careful not to lose the cover or the bolts (I turned one hole into a slot so that I could just loosen the cover and swing it out of the way. Shine your light in there - there are two latches on the pinion latch assembly. You want to squeeze together the ends of the latches that are closest to the operator's seat i.e. the rear. They're geared together so pressing on the end of one will release both of them. The front end of those latches have a step that latches on to a stop bolt. By squeezing the other end, you'll release the pinion from engagement. Use a screwdriver so you don't mung your fingers. If you need a visual, look at Toby's videos on youtube or look at this picture of my engine removed from teh bellhousing/transmission:

If that serial number is correct its a very early tractor and I don't believe they had the adjustment opening. I don't know the exact serial number break for when the opening came in. If its a later tractor what Neil says is correct. Serial number needs to be verified

I didn't know that Gary, thanks for that info. That would suck a little, but if Dave has a bendy arm : ), he can reach in through the main clutch cover, or bend up some kind of "poker" to get in there and poke the latches open

The pinion access cover did not come in until 5J1179. Either access through the clutch cover or start the pony while engaged and hope it kicks out at the correct rpm. Not uncommon to see a dynamited hole in the cover where some one decided that had to have access.

Maybe I missed something -
Disengage the starting motor clutch - if the pinion is engaged, there will be some extra drag, but you still should be able to start the pony motor without turning the diesel engine.

D2gary the serial number is correct. 5J115. the D2 is in Idaho at my fathers house (which I now own) in Pocatello Idaho. I will look for a plate Neil the next time I'm up there. I don't think the Pinion is disengaged even if you return the pinion handle to the disengaged position Dpendzic. And the engine is turning when I pull the pony motor over.
I'm getting no firing, not even a chug, and dread pulling it a hundred times while I'm trying to figure out the issue. Can I get the starter hardware for this old of a unit. Or perhaps I've seen someone rig up a electric motor and a belt to turn over the pony motor. ????
