D5 engine ID was created by dead axle
Hello group,
A D5 with serial 96J1667. Can anyone tell me if it was built with the D333C and what the pitfalls if any might be with that particular engine and with the D-5 tractor in general. Also would anyone know the horsepower of the D333C verses the later 5's with the 3306? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

96J1667 would have the D333C engine, nothing wrong with that, same bore and stroke as the 3306 and almost the same engine. D333C would be 93 hp, the later 3306 @ 105 hp which came in at 96J3588.
Just remember the D5 is still an old D6 when it comes to the single reduction finals.

Ok thanks Magnet. I just haven't been around the 5's much and didn't know if their scarcity was because of some inherit problem. It's my perception that they are a little more common in the ag setting rather than for logging, which would be what I will use it for. Thanks again!

Hi, dead axle.
Like most tractors with weak back ends, the D5s didn't suffer as much on straight drawbar/towing work as they did when subjected to the shock loads of bulldozing. That said though, I ran a 44X (built for Arabian oil field work) D5 with the 3306 as a dozer fitted with a ripper for over 3 years and never had a problem. BUTTT, I was aware of the back end issue too.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Thanks Deas,
This is all good information. This cat is set up for logging (Hyster winch and arch, screens on the ROPS, brush rake mounts) which is mainly what I'm buying it for. I will be doing some fire trail work and a little road building on my ranch. It is very true what you say about the operator paying attention. I like the smaller size of the 5 for getting in and around tight spots in my stands of trees for thinning operations. The heavier double reduction finals of a D-6 C would be nice but the overall size would be harder for me to work with in this particular application. I sure appreciate your input!

Hi, dead axle.
The 44X D5 that I spent 3 years on was a wide gauge machine and one of the sweetest dozers I have ever operated. I spent most of that 3 years leveling house sites ready for building. I was trimming to the same +/- 3/4" or less tolerance that the company track loaders were trimming to and they were all using spreader bars held in their 4-in-1 buckets.

The 44X had inter-connected steering - clutch and brake on the one lever - and it was OH SO SMOOTH and accurate.

That is the only machine on which I have ever worn a seat belt when working on side slopes - - - 'cos the seat cushion was about the same level as the arm rests and there was NOTHING else to stop me sliding over the side on steep slopes.

That's interesting because the first thing I noticed on this machine was the height of the seat cushion.
