taking apart pony governor, d4 7u

The bearings in my pony's governor seem a bit rough and I feel I should replace them. I have taken off both end covers and it seems to me that the bearing on the lever end must first come off the shaft to take the rest apart. Are there any suggestions? Does the bearing just pull off or is there a trick to it? Thanks for your help!

Hi from Australia. I'm guessing you mean the small bearing on the rod. When I pulled mine apart (D4 7U) the bearing came off the rod with the help of a small splitter. I was pretty worried about bending the rod.

Paul.

By the way, I found the two larger bearings in mine were ok, but loose in the housing (~5-10 thou slop). I ended up centre punching the housing and using some loctite 609. I doubt that was the right thing to do, but I couldn't think of anything else.

no that is an appropriate method of reclamation. have done that on trailer wheel bearings.

loctite quick metal press fit repair is the better product for that job though.

I think my need is even more basic, would one just put some pry bars under the edge of the cone and pull it from the bearing, or heat it some first? If the bearing stays on the shaft, it is easier to put some pressure on the bearing to remove it from the shaft. Thanks for the pictures too! Elton

I think that would work. You may be able to pull the rod out of the bearing and cap from the other end too. When I got it out, the bearing stayed in the cap.

I had a new small bearing but wasn't game to try and remove the old one from the cap. I don't have an internal puller that small. Thought about packing with grease to push out, but my history with getting that to work on pilot bearings is patchy at best.

Warm the outside with a propane torch.

i saw a video of someone use bread and a drift to remove a spigot bearing from a flywheel he packed it as tight as he could with bread by hand then kept tapping more in with the drift and a hammer until it popped the bearing out
