955 12A Traxcavator not turning!

More

Hey everyone,
I’ve got my old 955 Traxcavator (essentially an old D4) running well but seem to have big issues turning. It was suggested by the previous owner that leaking oil on the clutches needed burning off before it will turn but even after lots of use the old girl only wants to turn very very slightly, not enough to use practically.
Has anyone experienced similar issues or got any suggestions on how to fix the issue well enough to use?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! 👍🏼

You could removed the plug under the cluch housing to drain the he may have water mixe with oil and after reinstaled the plug and wash with solvant

Is it that the clutches release correctly, but pressing hard on the brakes does not seem to stop that side from turning? If so, it could be oil but it could also be that the linings are worn out. Can you get a look in there to see what it's like? Chris from CA resurrected a 2U and his brakes were oily, so he squirted some dry scrubbing powder in there and it did seem to help some, although I suspect that if there was oil in there in the first place, it would continue to seep in.

Hi Neil,
Very good ideas! It seems as though the clutches aren’t doing much, if I pull both levers the machine still drives forward unaffected and if I push the brakes the motor does seem to labour a little. Is the compartment that houses the steering clutches meant to be completely dry?

Thanks. I do have both the workshop manual and the parts manual which have helped me get the machine running well but unfortunately hasn’t helped me narrow down what this particular issue is. I’m hoping that it might be a common problem that others may have experienced over the years since the manuals were printed.

The Operation and Service Manual [one manual] will have all the daily maintenance procedures, adjustments, capacities and types of lubricants for the machine, a MUST NEED for these old tractors and todays owners.

There may be too much play in the steering clutch release linkage arms.

So it sounds like the clutches are not releasing, allowing the brake on that side to stop that track - that's how it's supposed to work. As Rome wrote, check your play. 3" at the top of the clutch lever before it starts releasing the clutch, and then you should have, I guess another 8" (not near my tractor to measure) to fully disengage that clutch
