D8 IH pony motor stalls in high speed beyond half compression

i have been working when I have a chance on trying to get my D-8 IH running again. I have been able to get the pony running and can get the main turning with the pony in low, and even get it turning with the compression on run, with white smoke coming out and if I pull on the throttle it tries to start, get black smoke and smoke rings, but won't. My problem is that I can not get it to go to full compression when the pony is running in high gear. I can only get the compression to half before it stalls. I have fresh gas for the pony, rebuilt carb and mag. Is it even possible to start the main with the pony in low, or is that just never gonna happen? I ran out of gas in the pony so I wasn't able to keep trying before I had to give up for the day. I have 90 pounds compression in each cylinder on the pony and new plugs and wires. Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated!

Let him turning in low speed with no compression a couple minutes after 3minutes in hight speed with no compression and open diesel trottle and go in compression and he should start

Brian, I think Hector meant 3 mins on compression in low gear, then change into high gear and get it spinning without compression then flick the compression and fuel on at the same time. I've never started one with the two-speed so have no experience to share. Seems like the pony should be able to spin the main under compression in high gear indefinitely - to be designed otherwise seems a little under-functional

Sounds like you are a little short on fuel. Have you adjusted the mixture on the carb? Try adjusting the main jet while it is under load turning the main engine. Just because it is rebuilt does not mean it is adjusted correctly.

Thanks for the input from everyone!

I can run it in high with no compression for however long I need. I had run it in low for awhile with no compression before I moved it to high with no compression, so I think I kind of did what Hector suggested without me realizing it. But when I move the lever up to try and get it to full compression, it dies out when it gets to the half compression detent. I can't get it past half compression.

I should also note that I have to run the pony carb about half choke. If I try to open the choke completely it dies out. so it may be that it needs more fuel. I am not certain how to adjust the jets though. I redid the tank and put in a new sediment screen and cleaned the sediment bowl assembly, so I know I am getting gas to the carb. I should go get some non ethanol gas to run in it as well. I haven't done that yet.

I also don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but I don't notice the governor shaft moving the throttle at all. Maybe it isn't supposed to? The pony seems to be turning at a pretty health rpm.

That's what I'm writing - run it in low with compression on, not off. You need to build heat in the main engine, regardless of whether pony can handle high gear with compression on. Your statement about needing to run with half choke explains everything - you need to richen it up. Either you have a blockage, or your main jet isn't adjusted correctly. Just try opening the main jet up a bit and flick it to compression on.
So, the sequence is:
- start / warm pony
- low gear, no compression until pony is stable then turn on compression. Run for x minutes like this
- high gear, no compression, when pony stabilizes, turn on compression. If pony starts to falter, richen it up a tad. Repeat until success or you run out of mixture adjustment in which case we need to diagnose further

Check how fast the fuel runs out of the fuel bowl. Open it up and let the bowl drain fully 2-3 times the amount that the bowl contains. If it flow slows down appreciably, you're not get sufficient flow. The fuel level in the bowl needs a minimum depth for the jets to operate correctly - if the level is too low (.e.g. if the incoming flow is not enough), then you'll starve

Yes the governor should be controlling the throttle when wide open, governing the load applied. Check the linkage to see if it moves freely. Maybe governor trouble also. Never have diesel throttle open when turning engine over until ready to start, having it open loads the cylinders with fuel and actually makes the engine harder to start. Build up heat with compression first then open throttle. With the throttle open when turning the diesel over is like dumping a five gallon bucket of fuel on a match, but if you atomize just a small amount of fuel it will burst into a flame.

If the governor is't running correctly and carburator is missing gas this should't help and make sure your hydrolic lever is't angaged fonction

You answered your question. If you have to run at 1/2 choke that is the problem. I am sure one of these nice men can help you tell which is the main jet and which way to turn it. Once adjusted you will be amazed at the power it has to turn the main.

the governor linkage is moving freely. it might be OK, its just that I didn't see it moving and I don't know if it is supposed to move a lot or a little. I didn't open the main throttle until I was ready to move it to compression but with the trouble I have been having I had to climb up onto the platform first to pull up on the throttle then jump down and try to move the lever to compression. so there would be a few seconds of throttle on before compression. But I can only get the whole process to work in low.

I am going to look at my manuals to see about the jet adjustment. It would be nice if that is the only thing going on. Now I just need time in daylight and slightly warmer weather than we are supposed to be getting here in northern Illinois this weekend. I am going to try the bowl drain process that Neil suggested when I get back onto it and see if that points to a fuel delivery problem.

I really appreciate all of the suggestions here. My dad is no longer with me and I am the only one in my family who last ran the tractor a couple of years ago so it can be frustrating trying to sort this all out on your own.
