Hi D4Jim,
I agree if we were looking at the tooth profile BUT I am referring to the tapered lead in for the ease of meshing for the pinion and ring gears.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I suspect the damage was caused by a bent/worn solenoid lever engagement arm that was not allowing full engagement of the flywheel teeth. If all is functioning properly the pinion gets engaged before solenoid contacts are made to power the starter motor. Anything that can be done to improve engagement of the pinion would surely help along with the new starter. How well reforming the ring gear teeth will help kind of depends on how close the pinion to ring gear clearance is. If by chance there is interference between gears the problems will reoccur. Make sure the correct tooth count pinion is being used.

Yes, this wear is abnormal.
I found the electrical wires eaten by rats. The old owner has disconnected everything. It is possible that the starter motor remained on for a long time when the engine was running.
Not sure if the starter motor is original, it might be compatible.
I attach a plate, I would like to buy a new motor, help me in the exact code of the correct starter motor.
I found this complete 8N2447, which you say is correct?
Thanks

I don't have a parts book for the 943. The 8N2447 starter is a Delco 42MT type starter listed for the 1985-92 943 only. The earlier ones (1981) used a Prestolite-Leece Neville unit. I don't know if they will direct interchange. What is the number on the starter you have?

Hi Team,
just as a by the way FYI and I stand to be corrected, but at around this time Cat started using Engine Arrangement Numbers that would require a separate Parts Book for, in this case, 3204 Vehicular Engines.
The book would have the 10X0001--up Serial Number.
Inside the book would be all the Arrangement Number listings for any 3204 Vehicular application Cat used the 3204, 10X engines in.
You would then look up your 4N8376 Arrangement Number in the Index and it will tell you which machine, S/No and which parts and page of the Parts Book said parts assemblies will be on.
As an example only, I have such a book for the 3306 Engine, S/No 3N0001--up. It lists all the Arrangement numbers for machines like 235 Hex, 966 Loader, No 12 and 14 Grader, D7F Tractor, 977L Loader and so on that Cat used the 3306 engine in.
I do not know the Form/book Number for a 3204 10X Parts Book.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
