Bearing dowel ,pins was created by hfdzl
Hello all, looking an update in education. How are the dowel pins in the rear of a D2 removed? There is a small pushed in cup plug on top of the dowel. That has to be removed. Then how is the dowel removed?

Thanks, Herb

With the plug removed the dowel pin will receive a machine screw (can't remember size) to allow removal.

Thanks, OM. So to remove the press in cup plug use a drill or end mill? That should interesting to pull those pins that have been in place 70 yrs.

Hi Team,
more often than not we used to use a suitable sized UNF plug tap that had sometimes had a bit extra ground off its end face to afford more grip length to screw into the small cup plugs--screw the tap in and keep turning, once it has bottomed and the plug will start to turn--while turning the tap/plug impart a lifting force to the tap and the plug will work its way out--worked for me since 1962 at the Dealers and beyond.

Cat seemed to use odd threads in the dowel pins but we usually found a fine or even a self tapper to fit and if the dowel had been fitted with the bearing drilling aligned they were loose and a magnet often removed them.
If the bearing drilling was not aligned and the dowel was hammered in or the bearing had tried to spin then more serious methods are needed--a good fitting screw and a pair of side cutters gripping the screw shank often levered/pivoted the dowel out.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Couldn't find the screw size in my D2 stuff but the D4 Service Manual says #6-40 tpi. I'm pretty sure the D2 uses the same.
