So much for my 2 weeks of fun in the “Beach”
Just a few pictures from around the play ground.

I was working on a rig some way out of town and with the full moon this week and clear weather had some nice shots! Wish I could do better with a camera at night.

Some are of the rig camp the engines I was working on and a few pipe layers hanging around. It was down to 55 below and quite nippy, warmed up to -20 and we all thought it was spring time!

The D399 were like the one I had at McMurdo made me home sick!
Quite a sound when all 4 of them grunt down and pick a drill string!

The two other pics are of the seismic cat trains at their yard.
Looked for a Lynn tractor but none was to be found! Maybe the operator was cuddling on a couch some where!

3512B,

I think I caught a cold just looking at those pictures!

Your pictures give new meaning to "Deep Freeze". It's hard to believe man or machine is capable of working in such conditions.

Thanks for posting the pictures. But next time when you go to the beach, try going closer to the Equator! :D

3512B back in 1972 for the school year we installed 5 of the G399s at a tech high school here & they were run on natural gas. They were gen. power for a total energy system that was installed in the school & they used them till about the late 90s before they installed power from the electric Co.They ran 24-7 but not all of them all the time. They had one set as a base load & then if power demand increased then another engine would come on automatically if the load exceeded 80%. The base engine was changed to another engine after so long so one engine didn,t run all the time while the others were on standby. They had 1000s of hours on them in the summer of 1991 so I rebuilt two of them at that time but the wear was very slight so standard bearings were installed again in them. The G399s are the basic D399s but have the fuel system removed & a spark ignited system installed on them (magneto fired) & a carburetor on each side for the natural gas system. Also we had another local tech school here that we installed two G398s & one G353 in it.They were installed in 1968 for the school year but since then they were replaced with the power Co. power lines too. This system also air conditioned the shools too & was heated by the cooling system coolant & also recovery from the exhaust system. That,s why Cat called it the total energy system.

we got a number of g399/G98 here on the slope,so I have a fair amount of Gas work here so I had to did out my gas books! I have 5 G3516out on an island that I have to do a tune up on. waiting on the ice road to be built so I can drive there insted of taking THE hovercraft.

In Bellows Falls vt when I was the resident there for Jordan Milton, The high school had a 3406 and a 3304 for power, same system hooked into the heating system threw a heat exchanger. It sezed a piston due to a over flow problem in the cooling system. the maintaince man had decied to take out a orfies and a booster pump put the pump back in but forgot the orfis My Good friend Annetes kids were happy as the school was shut down for 3 days wile we got it back on line. the utility wanted a demand charge of 15000$ to get em on line! I was their hero!
SJ nice to hear we been into the same iron!

3512B yes it is good to discuss Cat equip. with everyone & I worked for a Cat dealer for 36 yrs. & ran the engine dept. for 35 of them years retiring at the end of 1991.Up till that time there wasn,t many Cat engines that I hadn,t been into from minor repairs to major rebuilding.I always loved the old D343 OHC engines & many were used in OTR trucks & was called a 1693.They weren,t always the easiest on fuel or oil but was a powerful engine in a truck in their day.Coal strippings was a big operation here years ago so there was lots of big Cat equip.used in the operation & big drag lines & they used lots of the old D17000s & the D375s & D386 & D397s & D379s & D398s in them as the years progressed. These memories will always be with me & this site sure is such a pleasure to help bring back the old days. Also forgot to mention that the off road trucks were a great asset for hauling in the strippings like the 769s & 773s & 777s.Before they came out the old Euclid trucks were popular around the coal strippings & a few Macks.
