I’m getting ready to button up one of my CAT #40 scrapers. Paint is done, tires ready to be installed. I only need to finish up with some decals.
Has anyone had any luck thru the club purchasing individual decals, or must you buy a complete set for a tractor only?
I prefer supporting the club if I am able to just buy “Caterpillar” decals from here.
Thoughts? TIA. JM

JM I am going to be in the same boat next spring needing decals for a Cat 40. I don't know how many different font sizes are already available in the decal "kits" for the tractors but there may be a way to repackage what is available with only needing a couple of additional letters.
Maybe someone in the know can tell us how the decals are inventoried but judging from the order blank it might be some sort of pick list for each tractor or whatever. For example the "Caterpillar" across the rear of the bowl of the 40 maybe comes from some tractor with the same font size. Just guessing! When all else fails there are numerous decal makers that do custom jobs. I had a 24" round Skelgas decal made for my propane tank for my toy box. Made it from a smaller Skelgas photo but it cost about $150 for each decal.
Seems like there are about 8 different font designs over the life of Cat.

Hi JM,
Decal kits are made to order. Mary in the office wrote the following....
The kits are put together by order but we do frequently sell singles as needed. We don’t get a lot of calls for scraper decals but it’s possible we can help.... just need to know what is needed. We can get one-offs made if we know the font and size in most cases but it may take a couple of weeks to get things done.
Please contact her as she can probably help you with the decals.

I just exchanged emails with Mary (even on her day off?), sent off the serial numbers and she offered to research for me. That is an added bonus in my opinion! I might have to show these scrapers off now! The decals will definitely make them stand out nicely. The scraper is the FIRST Cat item I have spent $ to have blasted and painted, so I may as well do it right.
Thanks for the quick response. JM

Some info from the parts book may be of use to you as far as matching up something from an existing crawler decal
Edit to add that both those decal part numbers are used on the D4 U series so you should be able to obtain them from Mary pretty easily.

Thanks Glum, that is good info!!
Looking at the 40 again this evening I didn't realize it needed paint so badly. I have got more mileage out of the diamond tread front tires than I should have but I sure liked the looks of them. Lucky they are the 20" rims so can at least find something that will work. Would you believe the front tires still hold air!!

Hi Team,
scans from a Caterpillar Products Booklet, circa 1950, of a No 40 Scraper showing the decal locations on the draft arms and tube--I seem to recall that there would most likely be a decal on the rear face of the ejector spill board---as shown in one of the scans below of a larger scraper rear view.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Why do the wheels have ten holes but use five studs? Are they repurposed from a different machine by Cat?

Neil,
My rims have a small 'Dunlop' stamp in them so I suspect they were an 'off the shelf' item in the days before cat decided to make every component on their machines unique to Caterpillar.
