So I received my D2 in multiple pieces..... and a bucket full of bolts. All those bolts in the bucket are pretty well rusted but I've spent the last several days soaking in vinegar, wire brushing, then more soaking and finally ending up in my re-loading tumbler to finish off. Most of them look really good. In this bucket of bolts are some fine threads. Can anyone tell me where on a D2 that these would go?

Front timing gear cover used several, parts book will indicate which[fine/coarse] are used also.

That cat parts book I have which is appropriate for my D2 shows bolts, washers etc but it doesn’t give specifics on fasteners. This book covers serial # 3J5001 - 3J8600 which is within range of what I’m working on. I’m a total newbie though, so I’m open to suggestions.

I believe the 4 capscrews that hold the diesel air cleaner assembly onto the intake tube are fine threads on the D2.

all caterpillar equipment built after 1920 will be made with SAE threads which are unc, unf, uns and npt and nps.

you will probably only find unf and unc threads used with npt on pipe fittings.

be careful with pipe fittings as bsp fittings are the same threads per inch but the thread angle is different and it will not seal. any fuel fittings should use the npt(gas) type fittings for safety reasons. they are finer tolerance than normal fittings.

the hold down studs for the pony are like this too many studs were made this way on lots of machinery. a fine thread for the nut end allowed better torquing down as a course thread could be too tight or too loose.
