Cat 773A to Cat 660A transmission swap?

Hi. Folks.
A quick 'kwestyun'. actually 2, for the more knowledgeable among us - Do the 773A dump truck and the Cat 660A tractor have the same transmission - 9 speed 3X3 - and, if so, can they simply be switched from one to the other, i.e., same mounts?

We have a 77F Cat 660 tractor with a rather tired transmission and Cat 773 rear dump truck, series unknown as can't find a tag, which seems to have a good transmission but for which we have no use.

Any ideas?

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Can't tell you for sure if they will interchange. Might help to pin down the transmission serial numbers.
I show the 773 as having transmission 63G1-339. The 660 having s/n 58K1-up, 77F1-up, 90F1-up.
The 773 & 660 do not share the same transmission service manual sections, whatever that's worth.

Hi Deas,
from the Product Bulletin dated May 1 1970 it says the 773 uses a Torque Divider Transmission similar to the 769B--no pictures shown but would be conventional shape case with the valve pack on the bottom of the T/Div. Trans.

Pictures in the Product Bulletin dated March 30 1962 on The Wheel Tractor-Scrapers, shows a T/Div. Trans. as per above BUT, also one of the following configuration of T/Div. Trans. which has the valve pack on an angle up at the top of the T/Div. case, under a same shaped cover as the sump come valve pack cover at the bottom of the smaller 600 Series Scraper Tractors and 773 Trucks etc.----as fitted to my guess, 630 thru 640 series and maybe the 650 series as well.
So I would assume then that the 650 and 660 series has the valves at the top--see scan below.

Tomorrow I will be working on the 212 again and the owner has an early 641/651 scraper tractor Cat Serv. Manual. to peruse.

Later 641/651 etc. transmissions were the 8 speed semi-automatic units and were the ones I worked on.
Worked on plenty of 9 speed T/Div. trans. from 769, 773, No16 Grader and smaller scraper tractors of the day.

I recall the first time I reversed a 9 speed T/Div. scraper--on near full turning angle-- and I thought that 10 or 20 more RPM would be appropriate--scared the living heck out of me when it up-shifted from Torque Converter Drive to Direct Drive--strewth the front of the machine near hit the ground--not good on a newly assembled new machine or my jocks.

I stand to be corrected as the data is somewhat sketchy and confusing due to the generalization of the data in these Product Bulletins in covering several sized models.

Cheers,
Eddie B.
