I have a D2 5U series that I bought from a friend and has not been started for several years. Changed oil and fuel filters, got pony motor running. Have opened injector lines to bleed while running pony motor. Can only get motor to hit with starting fluid. Need help figuring out what is wrong. Was a good running tractor according to my friend. Can someone help me that has experience with 5U series.

Thanks Don

The fuel pressure gauge needle is to the right in the normal range. I had throttle 3/4. There is only smoke when I hit it with a little starting fluid. Does it sound like the pony motor is turning it fast enough with the fuel pressure gauge in the normal range?

the fuel pressure should be good enough to start it--but sounds like your not getting fuel into the diesel, it should be pushing out gray smoke that is unburnt diesel fuel--decompression off???

It is common for the rack to stick after sitting for extended periods of time. Take the side cover off and insure that the rack is moving freely, and that the lifters are going up and down..

Is this cover on the injection pump?

Yes, it's a rectangular cover on the side just beneath the injection pumps which sit on top of the casting that this cover is bolted to with, I think, 6 bolts.

Thanks, I will check this out later today and let you know how it goes. This is my youngest son’s first tractor. Hope we can get it running without having a major tear down.

I have found to only have luck with getting air out by bleeding the injection pump bleed screws behind the lines at the pump and never have had luck with just cracking the line. it a small thing but that's been my experience you can crush a 1/4" socket to fit if you don't have the D shaped wrench. did get fuel out of the lines when you cracked it? are you sure the throttle is off the shutoff detent I have had them stick?
