Dislodge Twenty-Two main clutch?

More

Herb or Ray, or anyone that has been into a Twenty-Two main clutch or currently has one opened up - my driven plate is stuck to the flywheel I think and I'd like to try to dislodge it - do you know if the plate is "accessible" from the side i.e. can the plate be seen if one was to look at the assembly from the side? If so, I could bend up a screwdriver to poke in the hole with just the right amount of zig-zag and while a helper depresses the clutch, tap it loose. I only have today to mess with it so I'm not going to remove the engine this time round. Maybe on the next visit.

Cheers,
Neil

Well, good news, I adjusted it up a bit tighter and it broke free so it's operational again, and I've given my brother instructions to start it once a quarter and ride the clutch for 30 seconds to dry it out / grind off the rust. I have the bearings bought so I'll see if someone has a worn-out clutch plate to sell to me, and I'll get it fitted with sintered bronze linings. The adjustment is right out so the plate is well and truly worn out

Neil,
Glad to hear you had success breaking that clutch loose. One thing that my Brother-in-law did was that he always locked the clutch pedal in the down position any time he parked the tractor. That way he never had to worry about the clutch disk freezing to the flywheel.

We discussed doing that and my recollection from the discussion on the forum is that it might have had pluses and minuses. Worth a try though I think. I'll get my brother to set the clutch. Our plan at this stage is for him to start it each quarter and ride the clutch a little to burn out any moisture and grind any rust off. But in any case, I'm going to take Herb's offer of the used plate and get it relined with sintered bronze facings to see how that works out. Works ok on steering clutches so might be ok on the main clutch

Hi Neil, I put sintered bronze steering clutch plates in my D2 5U years ago, and about a year ago used that D2 to pull my 22 along flooded irrigation channels for about half a day, the 22 has nearly new track chains on her that were rusted solid when I dragged that tractor home, and I'd gotten the chains busted loose, but they were still super tight, so I thought skull dragging the tractor through water 15" deep would be the perfect remedy.

It worked, but I'd forgotten that I had the drain plugs out of the steering clutch housings in the D2, so obviously some water had gotten into them while I dragged the 22, the next time I went to drive the D2 out of the shed the little devil refused to turn either left or right till I really jammed on the steering brakes hard, needless to say I was really surprised that my fancy new sintered bronze plates had seized up while the tractor sat, even though all the water had drained out immediately I finished that little job with her!

In case you are wondering, yes, I did check the gearbox and final drive oil in the D2, that tractor has all new Cat seals and bearings from one side of the backend to the other.

Sintered plates are brilliant, but not the be all and end all for preventing sticking issues where moisture is present. That D2 5U also decided to stick the main clutch plate on me too a couple of years ago, I'd driven it a few months previously, the next time I couldn't get it into any gear to drive it out the shed, I tried unsticking the friction plate through the inspection hole with a pry bar and diesel but that didn't work, and ended up pulling the clutch.

I suspect that mud dauber wasps had plugged the small bellhousing drain hole, allowing oil to slowly build up in the clutch housing over 7 or 8 years, and that oil actually kind of glued the main clutch plates together as the tractor sat for months, a similar problem it sounds, to your 22.
All the best
Mike

Thanks Mike, that's good information. I put the sintered bronze linings in my steering clutches too and left the plates a little oily and was planning a similar thing with the main clutch. I guess one difference might be that the bronze might not get as saturated as regular linings but that's only a guess. My other cunning plan was to fit dessicators somewhere in the chamber and then try to remember to take them out and put them in the over periodically. Ideally, the tractor should just be run but I'm only there annually unfortunately
