I have a D7-7M3498 1941 Cat that I have removed the flywheel clutch and found one of the pinion latches in the bottom housing. So before installing the dry clutch I want to remove and repair if necessary the pinion.
Do I have to remove the pony engine in order to get to the pinion? Any suggestions would be appreciated as my manual discusses the pony engine removal process but nothing on the pony drive pinion removal. I watch a video of a D2 that required the removal of the pony engine in order to access the flywheel drive pinion. Thank you John

With flywheel side access you don't need to remove the pony motor to work on the drive. Unbolt the sleeve and check out the wear on the stop that the latches grab. Should be a simple repair if the four mounting bolts are in good shape and the threaded holes are not wallowed out.
