Creamy Oil in Steering Clutch control box

Dozer D836A H series. Serial 36A2618 Trans 9H6833
The dozer was in the Chimney Rock Fire near Lake Naciemento in 2016. The pony motor was reworked and the main fired up. She moves in forward and reverse
and the brakes work. The steering clutches don't work. The pressure in the trans was 800 lbs and in the steering clutch box went up to 275 and pumped out creamy oil
and then dropped off to zero. The next step we are taking is to change the filter and oil in the steering clutch reservoir and if necessary replace the pressure relief valve.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated..I wan to thank Jan for contacting me and giving me some contacts and good advise.

Surprised you have not got any response on this. Your the next generation of newer machine than I can say anything that is helpful about, but maybe we can get you a answer.

Has this tractor been sitting since used fighting the 2016 fire. Or it was sitting and the fire burned around it? I am a neighbor in that I am on Chimney Rock rd.

Again, not my area of expertise or knowledge.
Creamy thick oil to me sounds like water mixed in with the oil so I wonder if during the fire it was doused with water to try and stop it being destroyed and somehow that got into the 'workings' ? Probably a very long shot.

The dozer was parked during the fire and as far as I know had not been operated for a year or so before the fire. The fuel tank was burned,
the dash wiring and overhead insulation went up. Someone disconnected the drive shaft to the winch and bent the shaft probably trying to
take the winch. I had the winch drive shaft reworked and installed it. Now the winch works fine. The next move is to change the oil and filter and
see if the steering clutches work. Nice to know I have a nearby neighbor.

It is entirely possible that firefighters washed it down trying to put out the fire in and around the fuel tank and put a lot
of water in the oil. The hoses seem to be fine. Thanks for answering and open to any suggestions as I proceed with getting
her going again.

Where exactly in the circuit are you getting or got the 800 psi reading? 275-310 psi or so is normal for steering clutch pressure. The side stream pressure relief valve for the steering clutch circuit should relieve at a maximum of 425 psi or damage can occur. Check the relief valve as you state then on to checking the control valves.
Milky oil means water in the system and candidate for rust and sticking plungers.

The pressure was taken on the top of the transmission pump by the dash.

Manual states that if oil pressure exceeds the 425 lbs damage can occur to the pump, filter and other components.

Hoping to go in and change the oil, filter and gaskets and clean or replace the relief valve. Bringing in a rebuilt relief valve if present one can"t be freed up. Only ran it for an hour or so... hope
the clutches and filters were not damaged. Thanks for the information.

Hi Tony,

Welcome to the Club! A lot of us get really excited when another guy with a D8 joins us!

You are in the right place for some real good advice. I did not give you Ray54's info as I did not have it but knew he was also in your area. I have alerted "Paso Bob" who is waiting to hear from you should you have questions and need local knowledge. My offer stands to put "Sprocket71" on the phone with you regarding your steering clutch issues.
