D4D Problem Steering and Brakeing

HI All, I am new to the Forum and the Dozer world. I would just like to introduce myself and hopefully pick some brains about the current problem I have with a D4D powershift Dozer I just purchased. I don't know what series/year it is as the serial number tag is missing. Engine motor is a 3304 and engine serial number begins with 43V06***. I have a feeling the dozer serial number begins with a 47H as I have been given an old receipt. As there are no tags on the machine, is there a way to verify the serial number?
Now to my issue, I am unable to turn left or right going forward but it works in reverse only when I pull the steering controls all the way past the side of my torso leaning sideways, pretty much to the chair back. I am trying to work out if the steering clutches/brakes are wet or dry as I have read a number of conflicting information. They are currently wet. Very wet. The steering clutch and brake assembly has been rebuilt in 2016 as per some paperwork I received with the dozer. The dozer is a mess. Any information would be very helpful.

Thanks all in advance.

Cheers
Jimmy

Early 47H's were dry and later ones were wet.
The late 47H I used to own had the serial tag on the side (seat side) of the battery box , I think on the right side box from memory. It was worn pretty smooth from operators getting in and out of the seat, but still legible.
If you quote the full engine number someone with access to the Cat SIS may be able to give you the serial number and build date, assuming it's the original engine. My 47H had a 43V series 3304.

Thanks for the reply. No tags in that position. I haven't been able to find any tags on dozer.

The engine number is 43V6020. On one of the old receipts I was given, it has S/N 47H07090. this s/n does not seem right and there are no tags anywhere on the machine to verify that the s/n is correct.

Does Cat stamp the Dozers anywhere with the serial number?
any ideas?

The series ended with 47H0811 , so maybe someone added a zero by mistake. The serial tag may be on the left rear of the bevel gear case, if the tag is missing it should still be stamped in the metal. I never saw one there on mine as it was behind the ripper backing plate/ ROPS mounts.

Replied by edb on topic Adjustments
Hi Jimmy,
welcome to the BB.
It sounds like you simply need to adjust the steering clutches and brakes by what you describe.
By the look of the steer clutches picture you have an oil rear end.

As said above the S/No is stamped at the top left side of the rear case face but would be under the ripper mounting plate.
Some machines also have a plate on the lower right rear of the firewall close by to the right hand steer brake pedal.

As I do not have a Grey Operation And Maintenance Instructions book for your S/No machine however I believe the scans below from a 78A D4D OMI should get you there--I stand to be corrected.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thank guys for all the info.

If it is a wet clutch, how much oil does it need. Should the drum be sitting in oil?

You did not say anything about the brakes. So just throwing this out so it was not missed. You need to apply the brake to make a turn,as well as pull clutch to stop power to the side.No connection of steering clutch to brakes like the newer stuff. You probably knew this, but has been missed before.

Hi Jimmy,
saw your other post with plea for help.
You can help us help you by telling us if you adjusted the steer clutches and brakes or not, and what difference if any that made to the steer clutch lever effectiveness.
I do not have any literature for this late of a machine although I am fairly sure these later D4D's and (941, 951) use a brake band anchor block that is bolted to the top cover of the steering clutch compartment for each side--see scan below which may have similar linkage system to your machine--although this is for an oil rear end as it has the three piece wrap around band I feel the anchor etc should be the same--the 3 piece wrap around bands were used to supply the extra drag needed to operate with an oil rear end.
As your pictures were lost in the change over I am flying blind with my neck stuck right out.

Cannot recall exactly but something in the back of my mind tells me that if the cover plate can be fitted in a reversed condition or the anchor block itself could be too--if so it would change the geometry of the brake band actuator operation and likely lessen its effectiveness.
From memory only, if either of the above was reversed then I feel sure that the brake adjuster would not be easy to get at and so be a clue to something amiss--I stand to be corrected.

From your hazy description that does not tell us if the brake pedal is solid underfoot but ineffective or simply moves full travel in forwards but not so in reverse, so it seems that the brake is only effective in the Reverse travel direction so that gives the clue that the band is not energizing when applied in forward direction pointing to a possible anchor block location/orientation problem.

You are not likely to get anyone to look at it for a few weeks yet due to Disastrous Dan's further 2 weeks total lock down added to the 6 weeks already in place--some 4 weeks served of that first 6.

Alas the last person I knew of doing these smaller Cats in the field sadly passed away a few years ago now. I do not know if his son Jamie is carrying on the business or not.
Jackson Diesel Services could be another try.

As I am in the vulnerable age range and live in the SE suburbs--I have only reluctantly been away from home 3-4 times for Dr's. appointments only since the end of March, also you are outside the Imposed 5 Klm travel distance from my home so it cannot happen as yet if at all.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Eddie B.
