Hi Everyone
I'm new to the site and looking for some advice on a couple of Cat's I'm going to look at tomorrow. The first is a 1932 Thirty Five with a stuck motor. The second is a 1950 D4 with blade and again stuck motor. Both owned by the same seller. Can these be brought back to life or are they now parts machines. Can engine parts even be bought for the 35? The price for the pair would probably be approx. $1400CDN($1050US). I can buy one or the other if I want. What do they weigh if I have to tow them home?
I've been turning wrenches as a hobby for about 30+ years on classic cars and repairs on my daily drivers. If parts are available and reasonably priced, I should be able to do the labour. I have LOTS of time but tighter on cash. Any advice or knowledge is appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Pheadrus,

Welcome to the club, i acn tell you that the D4 will be a 7U or 6U and have a D315 engine, as for parts they are still avaliable form Cat and other sources they are a nice tractor.

As for the 35 i have on experience on these, have seen a few and they are also a nice tractor if you need parts some one will popup with parts.

Ps, serial numbers are handy for to find info

Regards

Daryl

Thanks for the help Daryl. So for the price, worth grabbing both and trying to save? If for nothing else as a learning tool? I'll have pics of each tomorrow and serial numbers. Any guesses on weight? From what I've read, the D4 will be around 10,000lbs.

The 35 came in gas and diesel, the diesel is a 3 cylinder, a very smooth running and nice sounding engine.

If your prospect is a gas you need to check out the manifolds as they will be a big expense if you had to replace them.

Also, that weight for a D4 is a bare tractor. If you add a hyd unit, blade, winch, canopy, it is more like 14,000. No pics? There are definately D4 U series tractors around if one needs parts but often they are quite tired. It helps if you are handy with a welder, lathe, milling machine...etc but all things are possible. Will just cost more $$

I have mig and arc. Use to do Oxy/Ace years ago. I'm out of practice, but I use to do a decent bead. No access to machinist equipment but know a good old school machine shop locally.
The D4 has a blade and no winch or canopy. The 35 is bare tractor. I'm going to get pics and serial numbers this afternoon if the weather holds. Pretty foggy today so not sure how good they'll be.
Once again, thanks everyone for the time and knowledge.

Eastern end of Lake Ontario, most old Cats in Ontario are pretty tired out so it might take several parts machines to make one good one.
