Caterpillar D7E water in the oil

Hi all new to this site.
We have recently purchased a d7e to add to our collection and its leaking water into the oil, radiator is clean with no oil residue at all. We have been told to check the oil cooler but i would have thought that oil pressure being greater then water pressure would put oil in the cooling system not water in the oil? Any help appreciated

Definitely worth checking the cooler after you check the simplest item first. Remove the valve rocker cover (pre-order your gasket) and check for water leaks out of the "frost" plugs on top of the cylinder head. You might need to run the engine a bit to see this. Also let it cool down and recheck. If your sump has inspection covers, you can also remove them and check for coolant leaking down from the cylinder liner o-rings. Those are the easiest to check. From there, you can then check the oil cooler (again have new o-rings and gaskets ready ahead of time). Make up a fixture so you can apply pressure (soapy water will easily show leaks if you use air pressure). Not too familiar with this engine but if the water pump is gear-driven, check that the weep hole from the gland is free and clear. If it's blocked, a leaking gland could force coolant past the oil seal.

Replied by seiscat on topic Oil pressure...
Hello Hastingscat, welcome to ACMOC. While oil pressure vs. water pressure seems logical, it just doesn't work that way. Water can get in the oil several ways, if there are no other symptoms the oil cooler might be the problem.

Got bitten by the “rule of thumb” that a leaky oil cooler will result in oil in radiator instead of coolant in oil. After an in-frame overhaul, then oil showed up in radiator.

Situation was that tractor had been sitting unused for a while when the coolant was found in oil. It was leaking through oil cooler by gravity only. If tractor had been running, then oil would have leaked into coolant as expected.

If you want to take a stab in the dark, put in some radiator stopleak. Liner seals are probably the most likely source of your leak and stopleak has a very good chance of stopping it on a semi-permanent basis. Of course you can also finish plugging a radiator that has scale deposits inside already. I have heard of but never used ground black pepper. My favorite is a gel product called DIKE. There’s also the Barr’s Leaks pellets that break apart in the coolant. I’m sure you have similar stuff available.

If you want to put the stopleak where it most likely needs to go and minimize its getting into radiator, open block drain plug and pump a gallon or two of stopleak mixed with coolant and let it sit a day or so before adding coolant to radiator and running the engine. I had to go that route because the liner seals were leaking so fast I couldn’t run the engine until I had slowed/stopped the leak.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

HastingsCat, what's your tractor's serial #? Important for the correct parts if needed.

Thanks for all your help, serial number is 48a3721 or there abouts. We pulled the oil cooler this morning and made some blanking plates to pressurise it with our Pressure test kit.
It looks to be leaking quite bad so hopefully this will solve our problem. It looks like it wont be hard to find another one as this same cooler fits d4d ect ect.
