D2 injection question

D2 injection question was created by Sf1066
I have progressed to getting the injection system back together. There was a serious amount or crud in the passage between the fuel tower and the pumps. That’s probably what seized them up. So it’s all cleaned up and back on but I need to reset the lifters in the pump housing because I had to loosen them to get the pumps off. I’m questioning the shape of the pointer in the flywheel housing. The manual showed a pointed flat tab in there. Mine seems to be either damaged or rusty. I thought I would give a picture and you guys could give some input on how to set my lifters. Thanks. . Sorry for the weird double pic

I haven’t actually seen one in the flesh, but I think the D2 pointer is a part of one of the sheet metal fold up locks under the head of the fasteners holding the clutch housing to the engine cylinder block.

In your case I think it’s the lower straight edge that you’ll use just because that seems to be centered in the round window. Might be a good idea to verify TDC marks and cylinder numbers before you start. There seem to be quite a few flywheels that are installed wrong and that causes a lot of grief when you don’t realize it until you’ve already adjusted the lifters and then tried starting the engine etc.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

as ccjersey said it is made onto a fold over lock tab for the flywheel housing bolts however it doesn't seem to be very "accurate" but that is just how they are. check out Toby's squatch253 on you tube under playlist caterpillar D2 5J1113 then you can see how its orientated

I’ve watched the squatch videos. Very helpful. I was able to get 2 pumps out without having to move the lifter adjustment. So I’m hoping I can measure and confirm the pointer position. I hope to work on it tomorrow
