Transmission gasket installation question

Good day folks. Previously I asked for and received help in identifying the transmission gasket on my D4 7U36219 as part number 3B0889 times two. I have received the gaskets from my local CAT dealer for $112 each and find that they are square in section, approximately 3/8". The groove in my transmission/steering clutch cover has a rounded top. I assume the square gasket compresses into the rounded cross section, but how do you hold it into the groove while you replace the cover? I figure you must have to glue the gasket into place but if the glue sets up the gasket might not compress as it should into the round cover. I know it is probably a simple thing beyond my pea brain, but would someone please describe the technique I should use? Thanks! Elton

phildirt,

Yes, I read your reply and it didn't make any sense to me. You said use two of 4H5798 and that looked to me to be the gasket at the front of the transmission not the cover. If I misread you, I am sorry. Another responder gave me the 3B0889 part number. The only thing about 3B0889 that makes sense to me is the length of two of them is about right for the total length required for the cover. It's just that the gasket is square cut in profile and the groove for it is round at the top. I'm just not sure it will stay in while the lid is put on. The top of the gasket will not naturally reach the top of the rounded groove until pressure deforms it. Slick glue most likely will just cause the gasket to "spit" out of the groove. I've thought of using some clamps and a board to compress the gasket down until the glue sets, but I have never tried that. As many D4's are around, it looks like somebody has a trick for this.

I use a product called (the right stuff) it comes in tubes and is awesome stuff. It is call right stuff for a reason, it is the right stuff to use. I run a heavy duty shop and have often just use it if we can't get a gasket in time. I had just used it on my 17A oil pan (no gasket just right stuff) and later had to remove oil pan, it was glued on so tight we had to use a pry par to remove it. we love it. just google the right stuff

Elton, You can use regular 3M Contact cement. Apply both surfaces and let dry carefully center in cover groove , press down, works well for me.
