Cat 22 with a blade

I am looking at a 1935 cat 22 with a blade. It has been sitting for a long time and was rescued from a junkyard. I am just checking what is still available for engine parts and probably bands for steering clutches and main clutch. Thanks in advance. I'd really like to rescue the old girl.

Welcome mainewolfdog, go for it if the price is right, they made around 15,000 of that model, so there are reasonable supplies of parts out there, at reasonable prices.

Tracks and bottom rollers are often shot on old Cats, so it's worth looking closely under the old girls skirt, particularly if she has a blade on her, new gaskets are available for pretty much the whole tractor, piston rings can be made for around $250 if needed, new radiator cores are around $400 last time I bought one a few years ago, for a nice brass one, no doubt cheaper alloy one's are available, handles on the levers are available new from Cat., and John Hahn makes really nice seat cushions for them.

Typical issue seems to be fuel pump is shot, but those tractors run fine on a gravity feed system unless you are in the hills, and the other issue I've seen here is the fuel tank bases rot out, but they have a smaller gas tank within the main fuel tank you can use, but that only holds enough gas for maybe a hour, the 22 is a little gas guzzler, it will burn through a tank of fuel in under 10 hours working, but they are a really nice little tractor to start and drive, with very light controls.

They were designed to run on cheaper tractor fuel, like power kerosene, you start them on regular gas out of the small tank within the big tank, get the engine warmed up, then switch over to the main fuel tank.

We all like seeing pictures here
Good luck
Mike

Mainewolfdog, I am getting near to the end of a total mechanical restoration of my 1935 CAT22, 2F5209, so can probably help you with some of your questions when you get into your new baby. My 22 had major issues. You will find that an 85 year old CAT22 will have major wear and probably broken parts too, but they still keep tickin. For example, mine ran and moved just fine when I brought it home from my brother-in-law's, even though one final drive pinion came out in three pieces, one idler shaft was broken in two, and one track frame looked like a corkscrew. Since I grew up in the trucking industry I went to truck service and supply shops for many of my needs, such as re-lining the engine clutch disk and steering clutch brake bands. I also had a truck service shop re-wire my generator to 12v to be compatible with my 12v starter. I had the motor rebuilt (bearings, crank, rods) by Babbitt Pot near Ft Edward, NY. I found it was cheaper/easier to bore and sleeve the heads (NAPA) so I could use my original pistons and standard rings. The bottom rollers were in bad shape. Various ACMOC members, such as Wally, can help you with most of the parts you will need, and are a great source of knowledge. Just ask. Ray
