Block housing assembly?

On my D315 12A-03563 the Franck is bad and I’m needing a new crank or a used engine. My question ... would it be worth pulling the front housing assembly?
Reason for asking is the front cam bushing will need to come out because it is 3/8 of an inch into the housing cover.

Hi Fat Dan,
scans below from the Cat Yellow SRB for the 4 1/4" Bore, 4 Cyl Engines, Form No FE030522-02, Dated 07-60, shows that the end of said bearing is about flush with the bottom of the counter bore that is the space machined into the front of the Cyl. block for the camshaft thrust washer to fit into.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I was trying to talk myself into leaving the front housing on the engine block because it was really glued on but I thought better and pulled the cover. However; the information you provided is quite pertinent to my decision in pulling the housing so yes it has came in quit handy.
Thank you so much.
Don't ya just love it when Cat hinds a bolt behind a bolt holding down a shield protecting a housing which denies access to the pinned lever with an over-painted carter key just so you can adjust the idle?

Hi Fat Dan,
I took the front cover of my engine as well as there is a o ring behind it to, and mine was put together with a lot of silicone, which has now been removed.
In your other post is the crank shaft is cracked, have you had it crack tested? or dose it just need a linish or grind to clean it up. Your local engine rebuilder can do this for you.
As for gaskets Cat has most of them and bearings too excpt for one but you can find them all on Machinery Trader.
