when I bought the D6 9U known as Bigfoot because of the 33" wide pads, the cylinder head was unbolted and sitting on top of the motor uncovered. 8 years of soaking in diesel fuel and the pistons just popped out with hardly any effort. people are so afraid of water being in a motor but we are so used to taking cats swimming or getting seized cats because the exhaust was not covered this is normal for us. now i'll be needing some rebuild parts and where would be the best place to get.

I hope I have as good results as you have with the diesel soak. I’ve got a stuck D2 5J I poured full of diesel and oil mixture more than 10 years ago. Need to get back to it some day soon!

Sorry but I decided to swap ANOTHER engine into my 9U vs overhauling the “spare that won’t run” I was planning on using in it.
So I don’t have any info on new parts prices or availability. I would like to know what you come up with though.

at least you gave it a soak, most people leave a project for a few years and forgot to soak them down. with the beer flu lock I have more tiem on my hands so doing this project is the right timing.

I bought a "Big Twenty" about 15 years ago. Motor was stuck so I drained the oil (mostly water) and refilled with as much diesel as I could get into it. I recently decided to part it out and a fellow wanted cylinders and pistons. I figured most parts would be rusted, but I would see what I could do. The head came off and all but one valve was free, and it only took a little tapping to free up the last one. There was no rust in the cylinders and they pulled off pretty easy. The engine is still stuck so I figure that the transmission (which is full of rust) is in two gears and the main clutch is rusted solid. I suspect that the engine might have been easy to get running if the tranny had not been keeping it from turning.I will get the rod caps off in a day or two and maybe have a decent crank. This machine had not been run in 30 or 40 years. The moral of this story is that any engine might be saveable , but you dont know until you go into it.

By the size of that 'gentle persuader' I can see that those pistons would've 'popped' right out!
