You need to adjuste the bolt on the top sleeve pinion

As Hector says, there is an adjustment to the spring tension holding the pinion latches “latched” so the pinion gear stays meshed into the flywheel ring gear. Most models have a small two bolt cover on the clutch housing near the left brake pedal. When the floor plate and that cover are removed you can access the screws which are held locked by cotter pins through the screwdriver slot in the set screw and the latch itself. Usually tighten each screw a half turn at a time and try it so you don’t go too far and allow the diesel to over speed the pony motor before the centrifugal force makes the latches release.

There’s some videos of the pinion latch overhaul on YouTube channel of Squatch253. Toby shows the complete overhaul and assembly, so when you have watched through, you’ll know more than you need to to adjust the tension on the spring.

It also helps to get the diesel good and warm before opening the throttle and trying for a start. You want all the cylinders to fire the first two revolutions instead of getting one half hearted pop that kicks out the pinion.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Make sure you keep the throttle closed all the way until you are ready for the diesel to start. If you open the throttle and it kicks out the pinion without starting, just close the throttle again and let it turn a bit longer before you open the throttle again.

It may also help to throttle down the pony so it is running at a bit lower rpm to keep the pinion from popping out of engagement.

Otherwise, the solution would be to adjust the adjusting screws on the pinion. You'd probably just need to do one complete turn on each adjusting screw. Maybe even half a turn would work, but probably best to do one full turn. One turn may not seem like much, but I believe one turn of each screw adjusts the pinion release speed by around 150rpm.

This is a good example of making sure that the poster's question is answered. Although what folks posted is useful, his actual question was whether anyone could come help - D.Jones most likely answered that question.

Cheers,
Neil
